The estate

La Rioja Alta, founded in 1890 in Haro’s Station District, represents the excellence of La Rioja. This sixth-generation, family-owned estate brings together four wineries in Rioja, Ribera del Duero, and Galicia. Recognized among the world’s most admired wineries, it owns several hundred hectares of vineyards and stands out for its production of high-end wines.

The vineyard

This Viña Arana comes from the vineyards of Rodezno and Labastida in Rioja, terroirs that impart to the wine its distinctive character and authentic personality.

The vintage

The year 1994 was marked by a dry, warm winter that encouraged early growth, later slowed by a cold April. The benevolent summer allowed the grapes to reach maturity in the first half of September. A light rainfall just before harvest increased yields without compromising quality, allowing the grapes to arrive in perfect condition.

Winemaking and aging

Alcoholic fermentation of the Viña Arana Gran Reserva 1994 took place in stainless-steel tanks at 30°C. After racking off the lees for malolactic fermentation, the wine spent a few months in century-old oak vats before being transferred in March 1995 to 225-liter American oak barrels. Barrel aging lasted three years with manual rackings every six months, before bottling in March 1998.

Grape varieties

This wine is made from Tempranillo and Graciano.
