Gaining accessibility, this red offers plum, earth, leather and tobacco flavors. Though firm, the tannins are softening, and it shows an essence of ripe fruit and iron on the finish. Merlot. Drink now through 2023. 61 cases imported.

A little lean for Messorio but plenty of tobacco, cedar and berry character. Medium body, chewy tannins and a flavorful finish. Needs two or three years to come together. Better in 2019.

The 2014 Messorio is another very pretty and expressive wine from Le Macchiole. The 2014 has lovely mid-palate density, especially for the year, along with a decidedly exotic passion fruit/apricot quality that will only grow as the wine continues to develop in bottle. I expect the 2014 starts to drink well relatively early, but it also has enough freshness and balance to hold for a number of years. Hints of truffle, raspberry jam, blood orange and spice infuse the layered, creamy finish.

The 2014 Messorio (100% Merlot) was slightly shy and slow to open when I tasted it as a barrel sample about eight months before this tasting. I can’t say the wine has opened up much since then. It still shows a tight and slightly austere bouquet with dark fruit, spice, and leather. You don’t get that quintessentially soft side of the grape. Instead, this Merlot feels a bit thorny and prickly in places due to the much cooler growing conditions. The mouthfeel is less opulent and layered compared to the warmer vintages we’ve seen in the past. This wine definitely won’t be ready to drink for a few more years.

Description

An original expression of Merlot in a Tuscan wine crafted with respect for and attentiveness to nature

The estate

People and human endeavour lie at the heart of this estate. Eugenio was the driving force behind this winemaking project. It was thanks to his determined commitment and passion that Le Macchiole came into being. His untimely death did not put an end to his dream. His wife, Cinzia, decided to carry on his venture with the help of oenologist Luca D'Attoma. After years of hard work and achievement, the wines are now unanimously acclaimed by critics. The estate's work takes place primarily in the vineyard. Here, the philosophy is one of respect for the natural cycles of life. This respect is also reflected in the winemaking of these great Italian wines.

The vineyard

Messario 2014 is produced under the Toscana IGT appellation from the vineyard known as Vignone 1999.

The wine

First produced in 1994, Messorio embodies a personal challenge with one of the most widely planted varieties in Bolgheri, on the Tuscan coast, and around the world: Merlot. From the outset, the idea was to turn the finest bunches into a striking wine with plenty of personality, moving as far away as possible from the softer, more predictable style often associated with this grape variety.

The name "Messorio" refers to the wheat harvest, one of the most fundamental stages of the agricultural cycle.

The vintage

The 2014 vintage is remembered as a difficult and challenging year. Temperatures were generally cool, and there were a high number of rainy days. Work in the vineyard therefore focused primarily on protecting the vines against disease. The red grape harvest took place later than usual to achieve the best possible ripeness. Thanks to unrelenting attention to the vines, Le Macchiole produced sublime wines such as Messario 2014.

Vinification and ageing

Following the hand harvest, which took place in the second week of September, the berries were taken to the cellar to begin a highly precise winemaking process. Fermentation and maceration were carried out in steel and concrete vats over a period of 20 days. The wine was then aged for 18 months in new oak barriques. It was bottled on 5 August 2016.
