Wine Spectator

James Molesworth

This shows some of the vintage’s raisinlike edge and slightly angular acidity, but the core of mulled damson plum, blackberry and sweet tobacco soon takes over, with more than enough flesh for balance. Then the mineral and shiso leaf notes chime in for added length and range. A fantastic effort that’s true to the character of the vintage. Best from 2011 through 2023. 83 cases imported.

Ruby-red. Bright, high-pitched red and dark berries on the nose, with a complex array of floral and spice qualities gaining strength with air. Lively, focused and alluringly sweet, with deep but spirited raspberry and cherry flavors and a nervy mineral spine. The finish leaves spice and floral notes behind, along with a hint of rose pastille.

Drinking even better now than on release, and up there with the best of the vintage, the 2008 M. Chapoutier Châteauneuf-du-Pape Barbe Rac is lithe and elegant, with beautiful red fruit-driven aromas, licorice, garrigue, and mineral notes emerging from the glass and developing with air. Fresh, clean, and complex, this medium-bodied 2008 has a silky, polished texture, excellent underlying structure, and plenty of length on the finish. It will continue to improve for another year or three and drink well for a decade. Perfect with food, this is one of those off-vintage purchases you’ll look back on and pat yourself on the back for buying.

Description

The expression and generosity of a red wine from Châteauneuf-du-Pape signed M. Chapoutier

The property

Established since 1808 in Tain-L’Hermitage, the M. Chapoutier House embodies today the elite of the greatest names in wines from the Rhône Valley.

Vinegrower and merchant, Michel Chapoutier has managed over the vintages to lead this family business to the top. The wines of Maison Chapoutier are recognized for their refinement and high quality by the finest connoisseurs beyond borders. A man of many hats, Michel Chapoutier holds the world record for 100/100 scores awarded by American critic Robert Parker. Mathilde, Michel Chapoutier's daughter, has taken up the torch of this iconic house, overseeing a vineyard of over 350 hectares across the most prestigious appellations of the northern and southern Rhône Valley.

The vineyard

The Barbe Rac cuvée from M. Chapoutier is a Châteauneuf-du-Pape wine resulting from a rigorous parcel selection. Averaging 90 years old, the vines are planted on a plot with complex geology, composed on the surface of rolled pebbles from the former bed of the Rhône. The vineyard is certified in biodynamics and organic farming.

Vinification and aging

The grapes undergo a first rigorous sorting at harvest. Vinification in closed concrete vats. Maceration for about 3 weeks at a temperature between 30 and 33°C. Exclusive use of the runoff wine. Aging in vats for a period of 16 months.

Blend

Grenache (100%).
