Description
Characteristics and tasting advice for Ermitage “De l’Orée” 2025 by M. Chapoutier
Tasting
Appearance
Pale yellow, the wine shows bright golden highlights.
Nose
The complex and nuanced nose opens with notes of roasted corn, then evolves toward white-fleshed fruits, freshly cut rhubarb, and fresh hazelnut. With aeration, hints of lemon zest emerge, underlined by a pleasant menthol freshness.
Palate
The attack is ample. Both fresh and delicate, the palate reveals subtle aniseed accents reminiscent of fennel, accompanied by notes of brown butter and a fine expression of white-fleshed fruits. The texture, noble and flavorful, leads to a long, linear finish marked by delicate caramelized nuances.
An Ermitage white wine combining finesse and vibrancy
The estate
Founded in 1808 in Tain-l’Hermitage, the Maison M. Chapoutier holds a leading position in the Rhône Valley. Initially known under a different name, it has been linked to the Chapoutier family since 1897. A pioneer of biodynamics in the region, the estate also stands out for featuring braille on all its labels since 1996, as a sign of openness and inclusivity. Today, Mathilde and Maxime Chapoutier oversee its management, continuing the family’s standards and philosophy while bringing a modern approach, in service of a vineyard renowned worldwide.
The vineyard
This cuvée comes exclusively from the lieu-dit Les Murets, on the eastern slope of the famous hill of Ermitage. The particularly distinctive terroir is based on very old fluvio-glacial alluvial deposits mixed with red clay. The vines, aged 60 to 70 years, are cultivated according to biodynamic principles. Their naturally low yields promote high concentration and a very faithful expression of the terroir.
The vintage
A vintage beginning with a rather mild and very rainy winter, building good water reserves, followed by a prolonged cold period delaying budburst and reducing the risk of frost. Spring, alternating between rain and sunshine, led to strong vegetative growth and increased vine pressure, with early flowering but few bunches. The summer was marked by two heatwaves and a hail episode in Crozes-Hermitage, causing some losses. The harvest, early from mid-August, was spread out thanks to late-August rains that refined ripeness.
Grape variety
“De l’Orée” 2025 by M. Chapoutier is made from 100% Marsanne.
