Showing considerably better than it did the last time I tasted it, the 2019 Ermitage de l'Orée boasts notes of toasted grain and ripe, honeyed peaches. Full-bodied and expansive, it's opulent, richly textured and long, with waves of flavor echoing on the finish. Any bitter notes seem to have been seamlessly incorporated into the wine's impressive mouthfeel.

This is ablaze with mirabelle plum, white peach, apricot and quince notes that pour through, racing along atop notes of orange blossom, honeysuckle and quinine. The long finish drips with fruit, while also rippling with minerally driven tension. A late echo of salted butter adds the final touch. Best from 2024 through 2040. 26 cases imported.

Stunning nose of floral honey and brioche with a smoky tension. Enormous concentration of dried stone fruit, but also super-precise on the wide-screen palate. Long finish with an extremely complex texture and very subtle spice and minerality. From biodynamically grown grapes with Demeter certification. Drink or hold.

Moving to the three single-vineyard Hermitage Blancs, these are all perfect wines yet offer distinct characters. The 2019 Ermitage De L’Orée comes from more limestone soils in the Les Murets lieu-dit, on the eastern side of the appellation, and was brought up in 15% new demi-muids. It reveals a vivid gold hue along with gorgeous honeyed peach, white currants, quince, crushed stone, and white flower-like aromas and flavors. This full-bodied white has terrific concentration, a rich, layered mouthfeel, beautiful acidity, and a finish that just won’t quit. Offering more fat and opulence than L'Ermite and more minerality than Le Meal, this pinnacle Hermitage Blanc needs a year or three of bottle age, then should drink nicely for 5–7 years, at which point it’s best forgotten in the cellar for another decade. It should last for 20–30 years.

Beautiful mineral tension; driven by its bitters, this wine balances well the maturity of its yellow fruit. Tasty, with a feeling enhanced by a persistent grilled-roasted note.

What volume and what balance... The wine is driven by beautiful breadth and a lovely purity of fruit, finely wrapped in oak that never imposes itself.

Description

A full-bodied and complex Ermitage white wine

The estate

Established since 1808 in Tain-L'Hermitage, the M. Chapoutier House embodies today the elite of the greatest names in wines from the Rhône Valley.

As a winemaker and merchant, Michel Chapoutier has managed over the vintages to lead this family business to the top. The wines of Maison Chapoutier are recognized for their refinement and high quality by the most discerning connoisseurs beyond borders. A man of many hats, Michel Chapoutier holds the world record for 100/100 scores awarded by American critic Robert Parker. Mathilde, Michel Chapoutier's daughter, has taken up the torch of this iconic house, overseeing a vineyard of over 350 hectares across the most prestigious appellations of the northern and southern Rhône Valley.

The vineyard

A parcel selection, this De l'Orée 2019 cuvée from M. Chapoutier is a white wine from the Rhône Valley made from grapes from the Murets parcel, which is unique for its soil composed of very ancient fluvio-glacial alluvium. These old vines, averaging 60 to 70 years old, are known for their low yields, producing high-quality wines.

Vinification and aging

Manual harvest at full maturity. Pressing followed by a settling of the musts in the cold for about 24 hours. The vinification is carried out to about 50% in demi-muids with regular stirring and 50% in vats. This Ermitage wine benefits from an aging of 10 to 12 months, including 6 months on lees with regular stirring.

Blend

Marsanne (100%).

Characteristics and tasting advice for the De l'Orée 2019 cuvée from M. Chapoutier

Tasting

Color
Brilliant, the color reveals an intense golden yellow, with golden and green reflections.

Nose
The nose seduces with its rich aromatic palette. Fruity (ripe) and floral (acacia, hawthorn) aromas combine with notes of hot stones, caramel, and lemon.

Palate
A full-bodied attack precedes a complex palate. Aromas of ripe fruit, spices, and toast stretch harmoniously to a persistent finish of lively freshness.
