Wine Spectator

James Molesworth

This still has a gutsy core of blackberry, anise and macerated currant fruit, with secondary notes of tobacco, sage, mulled spice and tar holding sway on the finish. Very solid, with plenty of concentration still, despite being well along on its evolution. -- Non-blind 2001 Côte-Rôtie retrospective (April 2011). 700 cases made.

Vinous

Stephen Tanzer

Dark red. Very ripe but somewhat stunted aromas of blackcurrant, plum, nuts and woodsmoke. Concentrated, ripe and full; very rich but rather uncompromisingly dry. The slightly roasted red fruit and nut flavors show more breadth than personality now, but this young Cote-Rotie is unusually fat and persistent, finishing with dusty, ripe tannins.

The patina of this slightly grainy Syrah is charming, but more conventional. There is less terroir expression. Drink in 2011 while its flesh is still preserved.(

Description

A fruity and silky Côte-Rôtie wine

The property

Established since 1808 in Tain-L’Hermitage, the M. Chapoutier House today embodies the elite of the greatest names in the wines of the Rhône Valley.

As a winemaker and merchant, Michel Chapoutier has managed to lead this family business to the top over the vintages. The wines of Maison Chapoutier are recognized for their refinement and high quality by the finest connoisseurs beyond borders. A man of many hats, Michel Chapoutier holds the world record for 100/100 scores awarded by American critic Robert Parker. Mathilde, Michel Chapoutier's daughter, has taken up the torch of this iconic house, overseeing a vineyard of over 350 hectares across the most prestigious appellations of the northern and southern Rhône Valley.

The vineyard

The Mordorée 2001 from M. Chapoutier is a Côte-Rôtie wine made from old syrah vines. Located on the edge of the Côte blonde, this plot is planted on soils composed of chloritic and ferruginous micaschists. The vineyard is certified organic.

Vinification and aging

Harvested at full maturity, the grapes undergo total destemming. Vinification in concrete vats, accompanied by daily pump-overs to promote optimal extraction of color and tannins. Exclusive use of free-run juice. The aging lasts 14 to 18 months and is carried out in 225-liter barrels.
