Vinous

Josh Raynolds

Opaque ruby. Highly perfumed red/blue fruit, spicecake and floral pastille aromas pick up a smoky mineral accent with air. Fresh blueberry, blackberry and allspice flavors are energized and sharpened by a spine of juicy acidity. Distinctly lively in style, finishing alluringly sweet and quite long; fine-grained tannins make a late appearance.

Next up, the 2015 Saint Joseph Les Granilites comes all from the southern part of the appellation, from parcels around Mauve, Tournon and Saint-Jean-de-Muzols. Aged in equal parts concrete and barrel, it offers clean, classic Syrah notes of black fruits (blackberries, currants) and peppery herbs, medium to full-bodied richness, a silky texture, no hard edges, and a great finish. Drink it through 2027.

Tasted before bottling. A very noble reduction with toasty aromas, a palate with pure fruit, and plenty of elegance and style for a cuvée made partly from purchased grapes.

La RVF

It shows lovely maturity. The wine delivers beautiful sap and a splendid texture, with a hint of graphite.

The nose is fruity and mineral, offering elegance along with a fine concentration. The wine benefits from decanting. It reveals notes of crushed elderberries, wild raspberries and wild red berries, combined with touches of red flowers, racy minerality, subtle hints of garrigue (rosemary, thyme, etc.), olive, as well as discreet accents of Sichuan pepper and spices. The palate is fruity, juicy, balanced, fleshy and delicate, with lovely roundness and volume, elegance, generosity, precision and a silky feel. On the palate, the wine expresses notes of plump redcurrants, plump cherry and, more lightly, juicy raspberry, joined by small touches of boysenberry, blackcurrant, hints of garrigue, liquorice, vanilla, as well as discreet notes of sweet spices, black olive and a very subtle touch of caramelisation (on the finish). The tannins are supple. Good length. An almost imperceptible hint of ripe almond and coffee lingers on the finish.

Description

Characteristics and tasting notes for Saint-Joseph "Les Granilites" 2015

Tasting

Colour
The colour reveals a garnet red hue enhanced by violet highlights.

Nose
Beautifully intense, the nose exudes aromas of wild black berries such as blackcurrant and blackberry. It then opens onto mineral notes of graphite, typical of its terroir, supported by a smooth and elegant oakiness.

Palate
The attack is soft and perfectly balanced. The palate reveals fine, tight-knit tannins, carried by a superb mineral tension. The finish, with lovely persistence, lingers on savoury notes of black fruit.

Food and wine pairing

This red wine from France pairs beautifully with fish in tapenade sauce, small game, lamb, cooked cold meats or soft cheeses, particularly goat cheese.

Service and storage

For optimal tasting, it is recommended to serve Les Granilites 2015 at a temperature between 16 and 18°C. This wine can be enjoyed now and will continue to evolve favourably until around 2025.

The mineral expression of a Saint-Joseph wine

The estate

Founded in 1808 in Tain-l'Hermitage, the Maison M. Chapoutier is a true institution of the Rhône Valley. Since 1990, Michel Chapoutier has led the estate with an innovative vision, raising the domaine among the most renowned in the world. A pioneer of biodynamic viticulture, he transformed the approach to the vineyard by favouring the authentic expression of the terroir over a standardised style. Recognisable by its Braille labels, a symbol of inclusion, the estate is distinguished by its parcel selections that capture the true essence of each soil, offering wines of remarkable precision and quality.

The vineyard

The grapes come from the Saint-Joseph appellation, more precisely from the villages of Charnas, Tournon and Mauves, the historic birthplace of this cru. The vines grow on steep hillsides facing south-east. The terroir is composed exclusively of restrictive, well-drained granitic soils, shaped by geological weathering and winds. The altitude and the influence of the mistral ensure excellent air circulation, naturally regulating pests while preserving the freshness of the berries. The vineyard is managed according to the principles of biodynamics, with limited yields and hand-harvesting.

The vintage

2015 offered particularly favourable weather conditions in the region. The weather allowed the fruit to reach optimal ripeness while preserving its natural acidity and the terroir's minerality, resulting in healthy, perfectly balanced berries at harvest.

Winemaking and aging

The winemaking of the Les Granilites 2015 cuvée begins with a temperature-controlled fermentation in concrete tanks, triggered by indigenous yeasts. A four-week maceration allows for gentle extraction, followed by malolactic fermentation in barrels. Aging takes place in two stages: the wine first rests for twelve months in oak barrels to develop its complexity, before spending an additional six months in concrete tanks to preserve all its freshness and brightness.

Grape variety

This wine is made exclusively from Syrah (100%).
