Jancis Robinson

Cask sample. Very bright fruits, floral and earthy spice with a smoked note beneath. Quite tight and taut on the palate with firm tannins – dark fruits with good acidity. A little bit drying on the mid-palate. Meaty style. (AC)

Vinous

Nicolas Greinacher

Vinified from certified organic grapes, the 2021 Saint-Joseph Granilites displays fairly modest red fruits, cedar and earthy gradations. Leafy undertones add another layer. Light- to medium-bodied and well-balanced, the 2021 is an elegant and easy-drinking Saint-Joseph. I’d wish for a little more substance and length though.

Coming all from the granite hillside in the southern part of the appellation (outside Mauve and Tournon), the 2021 Saint Joseph Les Granilites has beautiful cassis and bright berry fruit notes as well as some classic violet and floral notes. It's another elegant, medium-bodied, finesse-driven 2021 with a beautiful sense of minerality. It should drink nicely for 7-8 years or so.

Wine Spectator

Kristen Bieler

Salty and smoky, with pleasing chewiness to its notes of red fruit, flanked with cured tobacco leaf, toasted anise and spice details. A bacon lard element brings meatiness, and a tug of tar plays out on the sultry finish, wafting with sandalwood smoke. Drink now through 2032. 10 cases imported.

Wine Enthusiast

Anna-Christina Cabrales

This wine reveals a high-toned, complex nose where dried lavender intertwines with black plum, black licorice, clove, and a hint of musk. Full-bodied and generous, its vibrant acidity lifts dense black fruit and subtle herbaceous notes, gradually piercing through firm layers of granite minerality that veil its depth. With time, its complexities should fully unfold. Best enjoyed after 2028+.

Tasting

Color
Of beautiful intensity, the color sports a garnet red hue, enhanced by brilliant violet reflections.

Nose
Deep and expressive, the nose reveals a subtle marriage between aromas of wild black fruits, such as blackcurrant and blackberry, and mineral notes evoking graphite, all delicately underlined by a refined woody touch.

Palate
The suave attack introduces a harmonious palate, combining precision, balance and minerality. The tannic structure, fine and tight, accompanies a persistent finish marked by aromas of black fruits.

Guard

M. Chapoutier's Granilites 2021 can evolve in the cellar until 2030, thus developing all their aromatic complexity.

The expression and subtlety of a Saint-Joseph red wine

The property

Established since 1808 in Tain-L’Hermitage, the House of M. Chapoutier today embodies the elite of the greatest names in Rhône Valley wines.

Vineyard owner and merchant, Michel Chapoutier has managed over the vintages to lead this family business to the top. The wines of Maison Chapoutier are recognized for their refinement and high quality by the finest connoisseurs beyond borders. A man of many hats, Michel Chapoutier holds the world record for 100/100 scores awarded by American critic Robert Parker. Mathilde, Michel Chapoutier's daughter, has taken up the torch of this iconic house, overseeing a vineyard of over 350 hectares across the most prestigious appellations of the northern and southern Rhône Valley.

The vineyard

M. Chapoutier's Granilites 2020 is a Saint-Joseph wine from a selection of parcels located in the municipalities of Charnas, Tournon and Mauves. Facing southeast on granite soils, they benefit from natural exposure to the wind ensuring regular freshness during the summer.

Vinification and aging

Manual harvest. Fermentations in thermo-regulated concrete vats with indigenous yeasts. Maceration of 4 weeks followed by malolactic fermentation in barrels. Aging in concrete vats (75%) to preserve freshness and minerality, as well as in French oak barrels (25%) giving the wine structure, power and aromatic complexity.

Blend

Syrah (100%).
