Robert Parker

Joe Czerwinski

Impressive every year since its inception in 2016, the 2019 Cornas Temenos continues that run of success. Crushed stone, pencil shavings, blueberries and licorice appear on the complex nose, while the full-bodied palate delivers dense, concentrated dark-fruit flavors and a mouthfeel that’s richly tannic yet ripe, finishing velvety and long. This vintage, it’s mainly from the lieu-dit Saint-Pierre, which is located at the top of the appellation, but it also includes bits of Champelrose and Mazard.

Decanter

Fresh and brooding, with an inner meatiness. Very full-bodied, very powerful, but soft and yielding, pliable tannins. Mouth-coating, rich, sweet succulence to the tannins. Long finish. Good – savoury, powerful. Should age quite well. Second vintage. Blend of Reynard, Mazards and Saint-Pierre. All bought grapes.

James Suckling

Complex nose with as much minty brightness as smoky and elderberry darkness. Tightly wound on the tannic and energetic palate, this has the structure to age for decades and certainly needs a few years to reach good drinking form. However, it’s well worth the wait, given the excellent earthy and peppery depth at the long, dry finish. From organically grown grapes. Best after 2024.

Josh Raynolds

Glass-staining violet color. Powerful, mineral-accented aromas of ripe black and blue fruits, olive, smoky bacon and black pepper. Densely packed and broad on the palate, offering ripe blackberry, bitter cherry and blueberry flavors that unfold slowly and become spicier with air. The blue-fruit note carries strongly through an impressively long, spicy finish, shaped by dusty, slowly building tannins. All of the purchased fruit that makes this wine comes from old, decomposed granite-based sites — Saint-Pierre, Mazards and Reynard, to be specific. 25% new oak.

Bettane+Desseauve

More refined and more elegant than Les Arènes, a fluid, silky juice on a backdrop of ripe red and black fruits; the finish is tightly framed by well-polished tannins.

Description

A powerful and balanced red wine from Cornas

The estate

Established since 1808 in Tain-L'Hermitage, the M. Chapoutier House today embodies the elite of the greatest names in the wines of the Rhône Valley.

Vine grower and merchant, Michel Chapoutier has managed over the vintages to lead this family business to the top. The wines of Maison Chapoutier are recognized for their refinement and high quality by the finest connoisseurs beyond borders. A man of many hats, Michel Chapoutier holds the world record for 100/100 scores awarded by American critic Robert Parker. Mathilde, Michel Chapoutier's daughter, has taken up the torch of this iconic house, overseeing a vineyard of over 350 hectares across the most prestigious appellations of the northern and southern Rhône Valley.

The vineyard

The Temenos cuvée from M. Chapoutier is a Cornas wine made from vines planted on the Les Reynards, Mazard and Saint Pierre plots, on decomposed granite soils locally called ''gore''. The vineyard is certified organic.

Vinification and aging

The grapes undergo a first rigorous sorting during the hand harvest and are then carefully destemmed. Vinification in raw concrete vats. Fermentation for 10 days. Maceration for 4 to 5 weeks. Aging for 16 to 18 months.
