A Roussillon white wine with exceptional saline freshness
The estate
Founded in 1816 when Étienne Amiel won the property in a game, the Mas Amiel is today an essential benchmark in Roussillon. Spanning 152 hectares in the Maury appellation, the estate has belonged to Olivier Decelle since 1999. A pioneer in the revival of dry wines in Maury, Mas Amiel excels in crafting vins doux naturels and dry wines from an exceptional schist terroir. Certified organic and in conversion to biodynamic farming, the estate perpetuates traditional methods including horse plowing and hand harvesting, earning it four stars from Bettane et Desseauve.
The vineyard
The Altaïr vines are planted in the Mas Fredes sector, within the Côtes du Roussillon appellation. The terroir is composed of calcareous schist, with light, highly draining soils that behave like sand, with significant stoniness ranging from 50 to 80%. The presence of clay at depth completes this singular terroir. The 60- to 80-year-old vines, planted as mixed varieties, benefit from a south-west exposure.
Vinification and aging
The grapes for Altaïr 2022 are hand-harvested and kept cold before being sorted on a table. Vinification begins with direct pressing followed by very light settling. Aging is split between 40% of the volume in demi-muids that previously held wine and 60% in stainless-steel tanks, preserving freshness and the expression of the terroir.
Grape varieties
This Roussillon wine is a blend of grenache blanc, grenache gris, and macabeu from old vines planted as mixed varieties.
