Robert Parker

Luis Gutiérrez

The eponymous 2019 Numanthia is a selection from over 100 small plots averaging 75 years of age. It reflects a warm and ripe year with its 15.5% alcohol and is a powerful and generous red with a full-bodied palate and plenty of ripe black fruit and spices from the élevage. It matured in 60% new barrels and 40% second- and third-use barrels, 20% of them 400-liter ones, for a period of 18 months. The oak feels better integrated in the wine, the tannins are fine-grained, and there is nice balance. 86,000 bottles and 750 magnums produced. It was bottled in July 2021.

Alison Napjus

A rich swath of crème de cassis, blackberry paste, mocha and licorice is counterpointed by a savory range of bay leaf, fresh earth and iron accents in this stately red. Fresh, with sculpted tannins and fine detail and focus through the long, creamy finish. Drink now through 2039. 6,950 cases made, 1,500 cases imported.

Decanter

Numanthia's hallmark intensity and broody depth with tobacco leaves and forest floor creating an earthy bed for the dark plum, cherry and black olive meaty flavours. Spicy, savoury tannins lined with nutmeg, white pepper and cardamom bringing out a sweet liveliness.

The 2019 Numanthia is 100% Tinta de Toro from the Toro Denominación de Origen (D.O.). It was aged for 18 months in French oak (60% new, 40% once-used), with barrels in both 225-liter and 400-liter formats. The nose offers black cherry, chocolate, soft cedar, hawthorn and delicate herbs. On the palate, this wine is powerful and structured, with richness and depth. Oak and fruit interplay to create a layered, full-bodied wine with extract and a soft grip that adds definition.

A powerful and refined Spanish red wine from century-old vines

The estate

Founded in 1998 by the Eguren brothers, Bodega Numanthia quickly established itself as the benchmark of the Toro appellation. Acquired in 2008 by LVMH Moët Hennessy, the estate is today managed by Julio Rodriguez. The estate manages 200 hectares of vines distributed across 200 plots throughout the Toro region, in Castille-León. Numanthia distinguishes itself with its century-old vines, some of which are pre-phylloxera, and its commitment to organic viticulture, certified since 2020.

The vineyard

The vines of Numanthia 2019 are located in the Toro region, on the banks of the Duero. They rest on sandy and stony soils with a clay subsoil. The plots, distributed on both sides of the river, benefit from an extreme continental climate characterized by harsh winters and scorching summers. The vines used for this cuvée are 75 years old on average and are farmed organically without irrigation. This dry-farming approach favors the development of deep root systems and the concentration of aromas.

The vintage

The 2019 vintage benefited from a warm growing season conducive to optimal ripening. The climatic conditions allowed for complete phenolic maturity to be reached, giving rise to a generous and balanced wine.

Winemaking and aging

The grapes for Numanthia 2019, harvested by hand from over 100 small plots, were vinified separately. Fermentation and maceration took place over three to four weeks in stainless steel tanks. The wine was then aged for 18 months in 225 and 400-liter French oak barrels, comprising 60% new barrels and 40% barrels of one wine. Bottled in July 2021, this wine was neither fined nor filtered.

Grape variety

100% Tempranillo.
