Located in southern Italy, in Salento, in the central of Puglia, the Masseria Surani estate boasts beautiful vineyards on the coast of the Ionian Sea.
Masseria Surani is one of the 6 or so properties of the Tommasi family. Driven by their passion for wine, the Tommasi family acquired a Veneto vineyard as their first wine estate, a Valpolicella Classica. Today, Tommasi is one of the largest family-run wine-growing companies in Italy, with properties all over the country and has earned a reputation synonymous with prestige. It was this same passion that led the Tommasi family to buy 80 hectares of vines around an old agricultural building typical of Puglia dating from the 20th century.
Already known to the Greeks as a fertile wine region in 700 BC, the shores of the Ionian Sea, a sea inland of the Mediterranean, provide the perfect terroir for the cultivation of the Primitivo and Fiano grape varieties native to Italy. These grape varieties represent a major part of the culture of Massuria Surani. However, Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay and Negroamaro are also present on this terroir, which is characterised mainly by limestone soils.
The wines of Massuria Surani bear the names of Greek gods. In this region, marked by such extensive Greek winemaking history, it seemed natural to the Tommasi family to showcase the culture of mythology through the names of these wines.
