Description

A balanced and complex Aglianico del Vulture wine by Re Manfredi

The estate

Re Manfredi's vineyards are located in the north of the Basilicata region, in the Italian province of Potenza. Located in Venosa, the birthplace of King Manfred I of Sicily, son of Frederick II and Bianca Lancia, Re Manfredi was founded in 1998 by the Montrone family. It is part of the Gruppo Italiano Vini, the largest wine group in Italy.

The vineyard

Perched at an altitude of 600 metres, the Re Manfredi vineyards are located on volcanic soil. The vines are cultivated in a traditional manner and are pruned using the Guyot method. The vineyard is located in the Maschito area, one of the most renowned in the Vultur zone.

The vintage

The year 2015 stands out due to its above-average temperatures and low rainfall. The volcanic soil’s ability to retain moisture was key and led to the steady growth of the vineyard. The dry conditions during the harvest helped to refine the ripeness of the grapes, providing both structure and complexity.

Vinification and ageing

Harvested between the last ten days of October and the beginning of November, the grapes undergo a pre-fermentation maceration once they are brought to the estate. This takes place at low temperature for 10 days. This is followed by a temperature-controlled fermentation for 10 to 15 days with natural yeasts. Finally, following malolactic fermentation, the wine is aged in French oak barrels for 18 to 24 months.

The blend

Re Manfredi's Serpara 2015 is made exclusively from Aglianico, the area's signature black grape variety. This single-varietal wine is therefore produced under the Aglianico del Vulture DOC denomination.

The tasting

Colour

Bright, intense ruby red colour.

Nose

Full and complex, the nose blends fragrances of morello cherry and vanilla with subtle spicy notes.

Palate

Powerful and well-balanced, the palate is seduced by this wine’s silky tannins and beautiful length.

Food and wine pairing

Re Manfredi's Serpara 2015 will complement game dishes such as wild boar served with juniper or cheeses such as an old Lucanian pecorino.

Cellaring

This wine from the Basilicata region can be cellared until 2035, enabling it to develop its full range of aromas.
