Robert Parker

Joe Czerwinski

In contrast to the Laya bottling, Cuilleron's 2017 Crozes Hermitage Lieu-Dit les Chassis aged in 30% new oak. Notes of baking spices and pastry crust join red fruit to create the sensation of baked cherries, balanced by crisp acids and a taut mouthfeel. Medium to full-bodied, with silky tannins, it's still a candidate to drink young over the next 4-5 years.

The 2017 Crozes-Hermitage Lieu-Dit Les Chassis reveals a deep ruby/purple color with an intense bouquet of blackberries, new saddle leather, toasted spice, scorched earth, and liquid violets. It's rich, medium to full-bodied, beautifully concentrated, with lots of polished tannins, and is a serious, ageworthy Crozes Hermitage that needs 2–4 years of bottle age and will cruise for a decade. Bravo!

La RVF

A wine with a spicy nose, slightly made-up, sweetened by the oak. The palate remains nicely sapid and velvety, but lacks a bit of freshness.

Description

The roundness and spicy framework of a Rhône Valley

The estate

In 1920, the estate emerged from history when Claude Cuilleron began to work his land to produce great wines. Since then, three generations have succeeded one another at the head of the estate, passing on an ancestral know-how steeped in tradition. In 1987, Yves Cuilleron, Claude's grandson, took over the reins of the estate and personally saw to it that its reputation spread internationally. Thanks to his passion and dynamism, he transformed his grandfather's 3.5 hectares into a vast wine estate covering 90 hectares of vines. Today, inseparable from its talented owner, the Cave Yves Cuilleron is one of the finest references in the Northern Rhône Valley.

The vineyard

Lieu-dit "Les Châssis" 2017 comes from one hectare of vines on the renowned terroir of "Les Châssis" in the Crozes-Hermitage appellation. Here, the vines benefit from a deep soil composed of stony alluvium. This plot is renowned for its quality and the long-ageing wines it offers. To preserve this precious terroir, Yves Cuilleron does not use insecticides and the very little fertiliser he uses is organic.

Winemaking and ageing

After manual harvesting, the estate carries out a traditional, plot-based vinification. Oenological products are put aside as much as possible in favour of indigenous yeasts. After sorting, crushing and partial de-stemming, the wine macerates for 3 weeks in open vats. The wine is then aged for 18 months in barrels.

Grape variety

Syrah (100%).
