Description
Characteristics and Tasting Notes for Alain Gras' Saint-Romain Village "Les Cinq Climats" 2024
Tasting Notes
Appearance
The glass reveals a pale golden hue, both clear and bright.
Nose
Wonderfully fresh, the bouquet opens with aromas of citrus, white fruits and flowers. Subtle notes of hazelnut, toasted bread and vanilla delicately round out the ensemble.
Palate
The attack is lively and dynamic, revealing a perfectly balanced and pure mid-palate. The finish, full of elegance, stands out for its lovely saline and mineral persistence.
Food and Wine Pairings
This white wine pairs beautifully with grilled fish, seafood or white meats. It will also wonderfully complement more elaborate dishes such as a citrus-marinated fish tartare, poultry with mushrooms, or fresh goat's cheese.
Serving and Cellaring
For optimal enjoyment, this wine should be served at a temperature between 11 and 13°C. Decanting it in its youth can help release all its aromas. Ready to enjoy now for its lively character, this wine can also be cellared until around 2031.
The Elegance and Minerality of a Saint-Romain White Wine
The Estate
Founded in 1979 by Alain Gras with just one hectare under lease, Domaine Alain Gras has today become an essential reference in Burgundy. Perched atop a hill in Saint-Romain, this independent family estate now spans 15 hectares. Currently co-managed by Alain and his son Arthur Gras, the estate stands out for its environmentally conscious approach, favouring sustainable farming practices and mechanical soil cultivation. Their wines, recognised in the finest gourmet establishments, faithfully express the freshness and typicity of this high-altitude terroir.
The Vineyard
This wine hails from the Saint-Romain appellation, located in the hills of the Côte de Beaune. The vines, around 40 years old, thrive at altitudes of between 180 and 400 metres on hillsides with thin soils composed of clay, limestone and marl. This geographical setting forces the roots to dig deep into the bedrock for nutrients, giving the grapes a lovely natural tension. The estate practises manual harvesting with rigorous sorting to preserve the quality of the berries.
Winemaking and Ageing
To craft the Saint-Romain Village "Les Cinq Climats" 2024, the grapes are partially destemmed (between 20 and 30%) before undergoing pneumatic pressing with strict temperature control. Alcoholic and malolactic fermentations take place partly in tank and partly in barrel. Ageing lasts 12 months, split between stainless steel tanks and oak barrels, 20% of which are new, in order to preserve the purity of the fruit while adding subtle complexity.
Grape Variety
100% Chardonnay.
