The estate
Founded in the 1990s by Makis Mavridis, a viticultural agronomist, and Angelos Iatridis, a Bordeaux-trained oenologist, Alpha Estate embodies the rebirth of Greek winemaking. Established in Amyndeon in Macedonia, the estate farms 220 hectares of vineyards between 620 and 710 meters above sea level, on a remarkable terroir surrounded by lakes and mountains. Still run by its founders, Alpha Estate stands out for its innovative approach combining environmental preservation with modern techniques, crafting contemporary Greek wines of exceptional elegance.
The vineyard
Ecosystem Fumé 2024 is a Greek wine from the single block “Kaliva,” a 2.33-hectare plot located in the Amyndeon wine-growing area, under Indication Géographique Protégée Florina. Planted in 1999, this vineyard reaches 632 meters above sea level, with a northwestern exposure facing Mount Voras. The sauvignon blanc vines grow on a silty clay-sandy soil over calcareous conglomerates, providing adequate drainage.
Winemaking and aging
After destemming and optical sorting of the grapes, the Sauvignon Blanc Ecosystem Fumé 2024 undergoes light crushing, then skin maceration under an inert atmosphere. Alcoholic fermentation is carried out in a controlled manner thanks to indigenous flora isolated specifically from this block, in fine-grained Tronçais white oak barrels with light toasting. Aging continues for seven months in barrels with regular stirring on fine lees.
Grape variety
This white wine from Macedonia and Thrace is 100% sauvignon blanc.
