Decanter

Colledilà is Ricasoli's original 100% Sangiovese cru – first vintage, 2007 – from alberese soils in Gaiole-in-Chianti, matured for 22 months in 500l tonneaux, 30% new. Sapid, ripe and glossy, it shows delicious freshness of blackcurranty fruit with classic limestone verticality and length, but needs more time to reveal all its complexities. 2020 is the first year that the UGA can appear on the label, and so this is labelled as Chianti Classico Gran Selezione Gaiole.

James Suckling

Very perfumed with hibiscus flower, citrus and fresh cherry aromas that follow through to a medium body with layers of fruit and very fine tannins that go on and on. Totally integrated. A joy to taste and drink but will improve beautifully in the bottle. All about harmony. Drink or hold.

Falstaff

Falstaff

Elegant bright ruby red with a delicate garnet rim. Expressive nose of rose hips, blood oranges, fresh cherries, very inviting and fragrant, red peach, with delicate floral components. Very juicy on the palate, polished and clear, with beautifully delineated red fruit, plus bright savouriness, long and very elegant.

Description

The harmony and suppleness of a Tuscan red wine

The estate

A historic Tuscan family, the Ricasolis trace their origins back to the 7th century. In 1141 that the history of the Ricasoli family became intertwined with that of the vine. Written records show that the family already owned Brolio Castle at that time, making Barone Ricasoli the oldest wine estate in Italy. They were visionaries, exporting their wines beyond Italy's borders from the 1600s onwards, and in 1867 the Brolio cuvée won a gold medal at the Paris Universal Exhibition. This quest for innovation continued unabated until, in 1872, a key figure in the family, Baron Bettino Ricasoli, took part in the birth of a legend in Italian winegrowing by creating the first production rule for Chianti. Today, the Barone Ricasoli estate covers 1,200 hectares, including just over 240 hectares of vines, making it the largest vineyard in the region.

The vineyard

Colledilà Gran Selezione 2020 from Barone Ricasoli is a Tuscan wine that stems from a vineyard located south-west of Brolio in Italy. Covering an area of 7.62 hectares and perched at an altitude of 380 metres, this vineyard consists mainly of Sangiovese, planted since 2002. The very stony soils are rich in calcium carbonate and clay, but low in organic matter. These characteristics, combined with excellent exposure, create a unique terroir that gives the wine its complexity and structure.

The vintage

This Chianti Classico wine had a mild winter and low rainfall at the start of the year. Spring continued with average temperatures and little rain. Summer was particularly hot, with temperatures in excess of 30°C and virtually no rain. October brought cool nights and some welcome rainfall, helping to produce a high-quality harvest.

Winemaking and ageing

Carefully selected, the grapes are then destemmed and transferred by gravity into stainless steel truncated cone-shaped vats. Fermentation takes place at a regulated temperature of between 24 and 27°C. After maceration for 14 to 16 days, the wine is aged for 22 months in barrels, 30% of which are new and 70% of which are one-wine barrels.
