Smoky, meaty aromas and flavors pick up a grassy mint accent alongside black currant, bilberry, earth and mineral notes. This red is powerful, with dense tannins that will need time to soften. Shows fine balance and length. Best from 2027 through 2043. 175 cases imported.

Bright cassis fruit aromas lead for this classic expression of Nuits‑Saint‑Georges, with classic notes of earth, mineral, smoke and leather. The structure is impressively dense and structured, but the lively acidity keeps everything in balance. The grapes come from nearly a hectare of vines in Les Cailles, close to premier cru Les Saint‑Georges. The wine seems more structured and dense than one would expect given its rather cool climate. This is a wine worth seeking out.

The 2021 Nuits Saint-Georges Les Cailles 1er Cru is higher-toned, verging on glossy compared to its peers with some polished new oak that I feel is masking a slight shortfall in fruit concentration. The palate has a bold entry with mainly black fruit and saturated tannins (for the vintage). It is velvety smooth but just a bit "blocky" toward the finish where I am seeking more finesse and nerve. Not bad though and it deserves a couple of years in bottle. Tasted blind at the Burgfest tasting.

The estate

Founded in 1731 in Beaune, Bouchard Père & Fils is one of the oldest wine houses in Burgundy. For nearly three centuries, 9 generations have taken over, one after the other, with the same ambition: to create an exceptional estate in Burgundy.

Gradually built up over the years, the vineyards of the Bouchard Père et Fils estate now cover 130 hectares of vines. Combining prestigious appellations with exceptional plots, the Bouchard Père & Fils vineyard constitutes a unique wine heritage in Burgundy.

The vineyard

"Les Cailles" Domaine 2021 from Bouchard Père & Fils is a Nuits-Saint-Georges Premier Cru wine that stems from a vineyard of 1.08 hectares, located in the south part of the eponymous village. This east/south-east-facing terroir, resting on a limestone soil, is remarkable for the elegance of its wines.

Winemaking and ageing

The grapes are harvested by hand and sorted before being partially or totally destemmed, depending on the vintage. Alcoholic fermentation takes place in small containers with a gentle pressing. Depending on the vintage, the vatting period varies from 12 to 15 days. The wine is aged for 10 to 18 months in French oak barrels (60 to 85% of which are new) in the Bastions cellars of the old Château de Beaune.
