Description
Characteristics and tasting notes of the Barbaresco 2023 Bruno Rocca
Tasting notes
Colour
The colour reveals a deep, highly limpid garnet red hue.
Nose
The aromatic bouquet reveals a beautiful complexity, combining aromas of pomegranate and faded rose with notes of propolis, fern, eucalyptus and an elegant array of spices.
Palate
Combining power and fluidity, the palate offers a velvety texture supported by firm, polished tannins. Flavours of blackberry, plum and black cherry intertwine with subtle floral touches of violet, as well as spicy and cocoa-tinged nuances, extending into a long and particularly refined finish.
Food and wine pairing
This Italian red wine will pair wonderfully with roasted meats, dishes in mushroom sauce or a selection of aged cheeses.
Service and storage
To fully appreciate this Barbaresco 2023, it is recommended to serve it at a temperature of 16°C. While it already offers great accessibility, its structure allows it to evolve favourably in the cellar, and it can be kept until around 2038.
Other characteristics
This wine has an alcohol content of 14.5%. Bottled without filtration or clarification in order to preserve its full aromatic intensity, it may show a slight natural sediment in the glass.
The elegance and complexity of a great wine from Piedmont
The estate
While the family's agricultural roots date back to 1834, the estate was officially founded under its current name in 1978, when Bruno Rocca decided to bottle his own production. Located in Piedmont, Italy, this family-owned estate of around 15 hectares is now run by Bruno Rocca, supported by his children Luisa, who heads sales, and Francesco, who is responsible for the vineyard and cellar. The estate stands out for its deep commitment to sustainable and organic viticulture, favouring the authentic expression of its prestigious terroirs.
The vineyard
The grapes for this Barbaresco come from carefully selected plots, notably San Cristoforo, Marcorino and Fausoni, located in the commune of Neive. The vines flourish on clay-limestone soils rich in blue and grey marl, interspersed with veins of sand. The estate practises certified organic farming, using green manure and natural compost to preserve soil biodiversity and vitality, while deliberately maintaining low yields to concentrate the quality of the berries.
The vintage
The year 2023 was marked by demanding climatic conditions, dominated by heat and drought. After a mild winter, spring proved unstable, with heavy rainfall in April and a particularly cool May. Summer then brought scorching temperatures, especially in July and August, with a heavy atmosphere. Despite a violent storm in early July, the growing cycle was able to continue into a more autumnal September, allowing optimal ripeness to be reached.
Winemaking and aging
The grapes for this Barbaresco 2023 are harvested entirely by hand. After destemming, whole-berry fermentation takes place over some forty days, driven exclusively by indigenous yeasts. Each plot is vinified separately. Aging begins with sixteen months in French oak barrels, the wood having been air-dried for at least forty months, with a preference for barrels that have already been used for several wines. The wine then rests for a further ten months in larger oak casks before bottling.
