Wine Spectator

James Molesworth

A ripe, flashy style, with alluring espresso and cocoa aromas giving way to layers of plum sauce, fig and prune. Dark and fleshy through the creamy-textured finish, with a flash of minerality checking in. Drink now through 2019. 6,665 cases made.

Decanter

Emphasis here on the delicacy of Cabernet Franc, with more dark fruit flavours than many vintages, a little more sombre. Still very young, with tension that runs right through the palate, stretching things out and giving plenty of time for subtle hints of black truffle, saffron, cinnamon, even fig puree notes to come up into the wine, finishing with fresh eucalyptus. This is a glass that needs time; while the 2007 is ready to go, this needs a little longer to really open up. Harvest October 3rd to 21st.

Jancis Robinson

Richard Hemming MW

Luscious new-oak scent still leads the nose, with rich black fruit that has a slightly confected edge to it. Grainy tannins give a tight finish, and the persistence is still oak-centric in flavour profile. (RH)

Vinous

Neal Martin

The 2008 Angélus is a vintage that I have tasted many times. It boasts a rich but fortunately not overbearing bouquet adorned with macerated red cherries, camphor, hints of jalapeño pepper and later, a tang of dried blood, almost ferrous. The palate is medium-bodied with smooth polished tannin matched with well-judged acidity. It is backward in style to the point that you could almost describe it as “charmless,” though that is by dint of its youthfulness. It just needs time. Signaling that this Angélus clams up towards the finish as if to say: “Too early.” You know what? It is probably right. (Tasted at the château and at BI Wine & Spirits’ annual vertical tasting.)

Very dense purple with violet highlights. Insane bouquet, sweet roasted notes, red cherries, wild raspberries and a spicy touch of cedar. On the palate, less an overwhelming bomb than a stylish statement: a Premier Grand Cru first impresses above all with finesse. Only then does it strike with power.

Very dense purple with violet highlights. Crazy bouquet where, within the sweet roasted notes, red cherries, wild raspberries, and a spicy hint of cedar emerge. On the palate, for once it’s not an overwhelming bomb, but an Angélus aware that a Premier Grand Cru must win you over first with finesse and only then with power.

The Wine Independent

Lisa Perrotti-Brown

A blend of 60% Merlot and 40% Cabernet Franc, the 2008 Angelus is deep garnet in color, with a touch of brick. It bursts from the glass with ready-to-go notes of prunes, baked black cherries, and mulberries, followed by hints of black truffles, black olives, and tilled soil. The medium to full-bodied palate is plush and juicy, with nicely mature black fruit and bags of savory accents, finishing long and earthy.

Le Figaro Vin

A dense, empyreumatic wine, very Saint-Emilion in style with lovely tannins; overall it is elegant and charming.

R.V.

A complete wine, from the black currant fruits through the balanced tannins to the acidity. It is sturdy, complex, a wine that is already singing and will age well.

Description

Tasting notes and recommendations for Château Angélus 2008

Tasting

Color

The color displays a deep purple hue, reflecting the concentration and ripeness of the grapes.

Nose

The bouquet reveals intense aromas of blackcurrant and black cherry, accompanied by floral notes of violet. Hints of undergrowth, pencil lead, and white truffle add wonderful complexity. With aeration, touches of sweet spices, tobacco, and vanilla emerge.

Palate

The attack is smooth and elegant, with a medium-bodied to full-bodied profile. Silky, refined tannins harmoniously shape the palate, while flavors of dark fruits, cocoa, and licorice unfold with persistence. Freshness from well-present acidity perfectly balances the wine’s concentration. The finish lingers at length, leaving impressions of dried fruits and spices.

Food and wine pairings

This wine pairs beautifully with herb-grilled ribeye, filet mignon with porcini mushrooms, or duck breast with cherries. It also complements game meats with elegance, as well as cassoulet or aged cheeses such as Comté or Camembert.

Serving and cellaring

Château Angélus 2008 can be enjoyed now and will continue to evolve until around 2037. Decanting for one hour helps fully reveal its aromas. Ideally serve between 16 and 18°C.

A rich and elegant Saint-Émilion Grand Cru wine

The estate

Founded in 1782 by Jean de Boüard in Saint-Émilion, Château Angelus remains a family-owned estate of the de Boüard de Laforest family, now in its eighth generation. Elevated to Grand Cru Classé status in 1954, the estate took a decisive turn from 1985 under the leadership of Hubert de Boüard, who modernized viticultural practices in collaboration with oenologist Michel Rolland. The ultimate accolade came in 2012, when the château achieved Premier Grand Cru Classé A status.

The vineyard

Château Angélus’ vineyard enjoys a prime location on the lower slopes of Saint-Émilion, in a natural south-facing amphitheater. The soils are made up of a harmonious mix of limestone, clay-limestone, and gravel, providing optimal drainage. This geological diversity allows the full complexity of Saint-Émilion’s terroir to be expressed.

The vintage

The 2008 vintage proved demanding for Bordeaux vineyards. After a promising start to the year, summer brought variable conditions with fluctuating temperatures and delicate moisture management. Fortunately, August provided favorable weather, followed by a sunny September that allowed the grapes to reach satisfactory ripeness. These late-season conditions encouraged the development of concentrated dark fruit and elegant tannins.

Winemaking and aging

Château Angélus 2008 benefited from meticulous plot-by-plot vinification with hand harvesting and rigorous grape sorting. Aging took place in oak barrels, enabling the wine to develop structure and aromatic complexity while preserving fruit expression and the finesse of the tannins.
