Château Cos d'Estournel 2016

Bordeaux - Bordeaux dry white wines - White Château Cos d'Estournel Château Cos d'Estournel 2016 1694/16
  • Parker : 90-92

A strong, impetuous white wine

Chateau Cos d'Estournel is a second classified growth from the Saint-Estephe appellation which also produces a dry white Bordeaux. The vineyard is planted on a terroir that is very characteristic of the appellation, with clay and gravel soils. The vines are old and have deep roots, which allows them to fight the variances in the the weather (dryness and heat waves). The 2016 vintage is a blend of 75% Sauvignon Blanc and 25% Semillon. Cos d'Estournel is aged in barrels, 7% are new.

The 2016 Chateau Cos d'Estournel White was marked by the strong heat and drought this summer. While the drought could have damaged the harvest, the exceptional terroir and the incredible know-how of the technical team made it possible to produce a very great wine without suffering from flatness or heaviness in the mouth. The colour is yellow with green reflections. The aromas it emits are mineral or flint stone, accompanied by notes of candied lemons and white-fleshed fruits. Cos d'Estournel 2016 has a straight-forward style and is incredibly fresh. The mouth is very well-balanced, with a hint of fat. The impressions of fullness is complemented by subtle chalky notes. The wine has a beautiful finish that is both lively and persistent. An exemplary success, in the face of adversity due to the weather.

Wine Advocate-Parker :
The 2016 Cos d'Estournel Blanc is a blend of 75% Sauvignon Blanc and 25% Sémillon that was picked between 12 September and 10 October, matured in a very modest 7% new oak. It has a fragrant bouquet with lemon curd, lime flower and just a hint of grilled almond. The palate is very well balanced with fine mineralité on the entry. Fine tension here, although I would like to see it develop more persistence on the finish, which just cuts away a little swiftly at present.
