Description
The Refinement of a Pinot Noir from Côte Saint-Jacques by Château de Marsannay
The Estate
The current building of Château de Marsannay was constructed in 1990 by André Boisseau, then head of the Burgundy négociant Patriarche, on the site of a château destroyed in the 16th century. Located in Marsannay-la-Côte, on the outskirts of Dijon, in Burgundy, the estate was purchased in 2012 by Olivier Halley, who is its current owner. He now farms forty hectares of vines, certified organic since 2022, spread across the Marsannay appellation, Gevrey-Chambertin and several Grands Crus of the Côte de Nuits.
The Vineyard
The Champeaux cuvée comes from a twenty-nine-are plot located in the northern part of the Gevrey-Chambertin appellation, in the renowned Côte Saint-Jacques sector. Planted at the top of the slope, it sits on a thin, brown clay-limestone soil with a due east exposure, which promotes good natural drainage and gradual ripening of the grapes. This vineyard is farmed according to the agroecological principles of Château de Marsannay, with certified organic viticulture, pruning that respects the flow of sap, organic compost applications and green manure sowing.
Vinification and Ageing
The Gevrey-Chambertin 1er cru "Champeaux" 2025 is currently available en primeur, still ageing at the estate. True to its minimal-intervention philosophy, Château de Marsannay favours vinification by infusion, complemented by gentle pump-overs, and places a portion of the harvest in tank as whole clusters when the ripeness of the stems allows. After racking off, the wine is transferred to oak barrels in an underground cellar temperature-controlled at around fifteen degrees, where regular tastings will determine the bottling date.
Grape Variety
This Gevrey-Chambertin 1er cru "Champeaux" 2025 Château de Marsannay is made from Pinot Noir, the only grape variety permitted in the Gevrey-Chambertin appellation.
