A balanced red wine from Saint-Emilion Grand Cru

Château Fombrauge is a Grand Cru Classé produced in the appellation of Saint-Emilion Grand Cru. This red wine comes from a vineyard with a total area of 58 hectares. The average vines are 36 years old, and are planted in clay and limestone soils and Molasses de Fronsadais. The wine is aged for 18 months, 45% in new barrels, 45% in barrels used for one vintage and 10% in the latest generation of concrete vats. The blend of the 2016 vintage is composed of 93% Merlot and 7% Cabernet Franc.

The winter was mild and humid, and budburst occurred a week early. The beginning of spring was cool and humid, with plenty of rain in April, which slowed the development of the vines. Frosts - though fortunately very rare - were caused by sharp drops in temperature in late April and early May. After a short break on the 25th of May with warm days leading to the appearance of the first flowers, the blooming occurred rather late in fairly cool and humid climatic conditions. From June 24th to September 12th, the summer was hot and characterized by drought. The clay-limestone soil reacted admirably to these conditions. The grapes began to appear on August 4th and the mid-veraison took place between the 10th and 15th of August. The harvest took place between September 30th and October 22nd.

With a magnificent dark red colour and shades of purple, the Château Fombrauge 2016 unrolls red fruits aromas and ripe tannins on the palate. The wine displays a balanced profile and offers fantastic length.

Wine Advocate-Parker :
Medium garnet-purple colored, the 2016 Fombrauge sings of lively kirsch, baked black cherries and warm plums notes plus touches of potpourri, cigar box and garrigue. Medium to full-bodied, it fills the mouth with decadent red and black fruit preserves, structured by velvety tannins and finishing with fantastic length.
