Description
Characteristics and tasting tips for Château Gazin 1999
Tasting
Colour
The wine displays a garnet hue with brick-red highlights, a sign of its graceful evolution, having shown an intense purple in its youth.
Nose
The bouquet opens with luscious aromas of ripe black fruit such as plum, black cherry and blackcurrant, wrapped in rich notes of toasted oak. With time, this complex nose reveals subtle tertiary scents of truffle, undergrowth and delicate leather, along with hints of roasted coffee and chocolate.
Palate
Medium-bodied, the palate charms with its elegance and velvety texture. Flavourful and harmonious, it unfolds perfectly integrated, seamless tannins before stretching into a long, beautifully fragrant finish.
Food and wine pairings
This red wine pairs wonderfully with roasted or braised meats such as tournedos Rossini or a grilled rib-eye steak. It also enhances lamb, duck breast and dishes featuring game or wild mushrooms, such as a porcini risotto or a pheasant pie.
The elegance and complexity of a Pomerol wine
The estate
Located on the Right Bank of Bordeaux, Château Gazin traces its origins back to the 12th century, when the Knights of St John of Jerusalem built a hospice there. However, the wine estate itself was only truly established in 1772. Acquired in 1918 by Louis Soualle, it is now run by his descendants, Nicolas de Bailliencourt, together with Élise and Édouard. This historic family property stands out for its large, contiguous vineyard and its commitment to environmentally friendly practices, producing wines that combine classicism, power and finesse.
The vineyard
The 26-hectare vineyard lies in a single block on the high terrace of the Pomerol plateau, alongside illustrious neighbours. The vines, 35 years old on average, with some plots dating back to 1942, thrive on a remarkable terroir of Günz gravel on the surface over a subsoil of blue and green clay rich in iron oxides. The estate favours sustainable viticulture, including hand harvesting, ploughing and the use of organic fertilisers.
The vintage
1999 stood out as a well-balanced vintage overall. Free from any major excess of heat or rainfall, these mild weather conditions allowed the berries to ripen steadily and optimally throughout the growing season.
Vinification and ageing
Traditional vinification takes place in vats, with rigorous temperature control and carefully managed extraction. After malolactic fermentation, the wine undergoes meticulous ageing in oak barrels, around half of them new, for 15 to 18 months.
Grape varieties
85% Merlot, 12% Cabernet Sauvignon, 3% Cabernet Franc.
