Description
Characteristics and tasting tips for Château Lynch-Moussas 1997
Tasting
Colour
The wine displays a deep ruby hue that develops subtle garnet highlights over time.
Nose
Complex and expressive, the nose blends aromas of black and red fruit, such as blackcurrant and blackberry, with enticing toasty, chocolatey and lightly spiced notes.
Palate
Built on a firm tannic framework, the palate captivates with its delicate flesh, roundness and velvety texture, extending into a long finish with hints of spice.
Food and wine pairing
This red wine pairs beautifully with hearty red meats such as a roast rack of lamb or a grilled rib-eye steak. It is also an excellent match for slow-cooked dishes, game in rich sauces and hard cheeses such as a mature Comté or Cantal.
Serving and cellaring
For optimal enjoyment, serve Château Lynch-Moussas 1997 at a temperature of 17 to 18°C, opening it one to two hours beforehand or decanting it very gently. With serious ageing potential, this wine is built to be cellared for several decades.
The balance and complexity of a great Pauillac wine
The estate
The history of Château Lynch-Moussas, located in Pauillac in the Bordeaux region, dates back to 1610 and the Domaine de Moussas-Bages. The estate was officially divided and established under its current name in 1835. Ranked as a 5th Grand Cru Classé in 1855, it was acquired by the Castéja family in 1919. Following an extensive restructuring led by Émile Castéja in the 1970s, the property is now run by Philippe Castéja. This historic estate stands out for its ability to produce wines that combine the power typical of its appellation with appealing approachability.
The vineyard
The vineyard covers around 62 hectares, most of which lie in the heart of the Pauillac appellation, with a few plots in Haut-Médoc. The vines, with an average age of around thirty years, thrive on Günzian gravel mounds over a clay subsoil. This exceptional west-facing terroir, tempered by the oceanic influence of the Gironde estuary, ensures optimal drainage and even ripening of the grapes.
Vinification and ageing
In modernised cellars, Château Lynch-Moussas 1997 undergoes careful ageing in oak barrels. This maturation period lasts between 14 and 18 months, with 60% new oak, refining the wine's structure while encouraging slow micro-oxygenation.
Grape varieties
Cabernet Sauvignon (75%), Merlot (25%).
