Description
Characteristics and Tasting Notes of the Musigny Grand Cru "Vieilles Vignes" 2023 from Domaine Comte Georges de Vogüé
Tasting Notes
Colour
This red wine displays a beautifully clear, bright hue, typical of the Pinot Noirs from its appellation.
Nose
The aromatic bouquet stands out for its remarkable precision. It reveals notes of black and red fruits such as blackberry, raspberry and cherry. Floral hints of rose petals and iris intertwine with touches of orange zest, incense, undergrowth and a mineral character reminiscent of crushed stone.
Palate
The palate offers a medium to full-bodied texture, both fresh and layered. It is built around a rich fruit core, supported by exceptionally fine tannins. The whole is taut and linear, extending into a long, aromatic and complex finish.
Food and Wine Pairing
This wine pairs beautifully with delicately textured meats such as roasted pigeon, veal fillet with mushrooms or high-quality poultry. It also works wonderfully with a risotto made with ancient grains and vegetables, as well as with pressed, cooked cheeses such as an aged Comté or a Beaufort.
Serving and Cellaring
This Musigny Grand Cru "Vieilles Vignes" 2023 is built for very long ageing and can be cellared for enjoyment until around 2053.
A Grand Cru from Burgundy of Remarkable Finesse
The Estate
Although the family's winegrowing roots date back to 1450, Domaine Comte Georges de Vogüé took on its true modern form after the Second World War. Located in Burgundy, the estate spans approximately 12.5 hectares. Today, the domaine is run by the founder's granddaughters, Claire de Causans and Marie de Ladoucette, supported by a stable technical team that ensures continuity in the house style, renowned for its respectful approach to terroir and its position as the largest landowner in its flagship appellation.
The Vineyard
The domaine owns approximately 7.2 hectares within the Musigny grand cru, representing nearly two-thirds of the appellation, including the monopole of the Petits Musignys sub-section. The vines, located on mid-slope positions between 260 and 300 metres in altitude, grow on soils of red clay and limestone. The vineyard is farmed using sustainable practices, incorporating organic methods and pheromone-based mating disruption. Harvesting is carried out entirely by hand.
The Vintage
Faced with contemporary climatic conditions favouring rapid ripening, 2023 was marked by the decision to harvest early. This timing within the growing cycle made it possible to pick grapes at full phenolic ripeness while preserving beautiful natural freshness.
Winemaking and Ageing
For the Musigny Grand Cru "Vieilles Vignes" 2023, the harvest is 100% destemmed. After a cold maceration, fermentation begins under the action of indigenous yeasts in wooden vats, with temperatures kept below 32°C. Ageing then takes place in barrels, with a proportion of new oak ranging between 35 and 45%.
Grape Variety
Pinot Noir (100%). This cuvée is made exclusively from vines over 25 years old, with an average age often exceeding 40 years.
