Cask sample. Does what it says on the Bâtard tin. Powerful, weighty, concentrated, structured with oak evident but not dominating. Nutty, complex palate with plenty of ripe, succulent fruit. Mineral undertow. Carries the weight with aplomb. (AWH)

Vinous

Neal Martin

The 2022 Bâtard-Montrachet Grand Cru is marginally deeper in colour than its peers. This feels heavily reduced, a little feral and alcoholic compared to Thomas Morey's own Bâtard. The palate is balanced with a slightly viscous entry, seemingly a later-picked Bâtard with ample concentration, though it just loses some of its precision towards the finish. Tasted blind at the annual Burgfest tasting.

Description

Characteristics and Tasting Notes for the Bâtard-Montrachet Grand Cru 2022 Domaine de la Vougeraie

Tasting

Colour
The colour reveals a pale to medium gold hue, enhanced by subtle emerald green highlights and beautiful clarity.

Nose
The aromatic bouquet opens with citrus notes, such as lemon and grapefruit, intertwined with stone fruit aromas like white peach and pear. Touches of butter, brioche, toasted almond and hazelnut intertwine with subtle mineral nuances and dried fruit.

Palate
Both smooth and firm, the palate offers a rich texture perfectly balanced by beautiful freshness. The buttery and toasted notes blend harmoniously with a mineral and saline framework. The finish is remarkably long, lingering on citrus and mineral accents.

Food and Wine Pairing

This white wine pairs wonderfully with refined dishes such as foie gras pâté, shellfish like lobster or crayfish, as well as veal sweetbreads served with a creamy mushroom sauce. It also enhances firm-fleshed fish or white asparagus with béarnaise sauce.

Service and Storage

For optimal tasting of the Bâtard-Montrachet Grand Cru 2022, it is recommended to serve it at a temperature between 12 and 14°C, after decanting for about thirty minutes. This wine can be cellared and enjoyed until around 2035.

The Expression of a Great Burgundy Terroir by Domaine de la Vougeraie

The Estate

Founded in 1999 by Nathalie and Jean-Charles Boisset, Domaine de la Vougeraie is a key figure in Burgundy, France. This 34-hectare estate, spread across the Côte de Nuits and the Côte de Beaune, was born from the desire to bring together the family's vineyards. Now managed by Sylvie Poillot, the estate stands out for its deep commitment to organic and biodynamic viticulture, seeking to express the purity of its terroirs through wines of great precision.

The Vineyard

The Bâtard-Montrachet vineyard is located in the Côte de Beaune, at an altitude of 240 to 250 metres. The estate's vines, spread across three plots planted in 1970, 1985 and 2011-2012, benefit from an ideal south-east exposure to capture sunlight. Resting on thick soils of brown limestone and clay, this terroir is cultivated according to the principles of biodynamics, promoting biodiversity through the presence of beehives, the use of plant-based preparations and horse ploughing.

The Vintage

The year 2022 began with a slight frost episode in April, without major consequences for the vines. The growing cycle then benefited from mild temperatures and record sunshine, offering the equivalent of an extra month of July. Moderate rainfall helped avoid any water stress, ensuring healthy and optimal ripening of the grapes, with no trace of disease.

Winemaking and Aging

The making of the Bâtard-Montrachet Grand Cru 2022 begins with whole-cluster pressing lasting two and a half hours, followed by twelve hours of static settling. The must then ferments in French oak barrels. Aging continues for 18 months in these same barrels, 28% of which are new, sourced from the forests of Cher and Cîteaux, with a medium toast. The wine is finally bottled without filtration.

Grape Variety

100% Chardonnay.
