James Suckling

Ryan Montgomery

A refined, delicate wine from this large grand cru vineyard, bringing a high level of purity, seduction and aromatic lift with an elusive yet deep level of fruit and savory nuances. Aromas of fresh red berries, blackberries, dried flowers, violets, Asian spices, charcuterie, graphite and forest floor. The palate is mid-weighted with fine-boned tannins, a luscious, silken mouthfeel and long acidity bringing tension and clarity. A characterful wine with a classy, polished presence. Truly delightful. Drink or hold.

Description

Characteristics and tasting notes of the Clos Vougeot Grand Cru 2023

Tasting

Colour
The colour reveals an intense red hue with deep cherry glints.

Nose
The aromatic bouquet opens with a lovely concentration of red and black fruits, intertwined with notes of orange marmalade and rose petals. With aeration, fresh raspberry scents emerge, underscored by soft spices and a musky touch.

Palate
Displaying dense, fleshy fruit, the palate offers ample, fine tannins. Flavours of black fruit mingle with subtle nuances of damp earth, leading to a balanced finish with no harshness.

Food and wine pairing

This red wine pairs beautifully with a beef entrecôte, roasted poultry or furred game such as wild boar and venison. It also goes wonderfully with duck confit, guinea fowl with wild mushrooms, a potato and cep gratin, or characterful matured cheeses.

Service and storage

Boasting significant ageing potential, this 2023 vintage can be cellared and enjoyed until around 2040.

Other characteristics

This wine has an alcohol content of 13%, with a pH of 3.4 and an acidity of 3.69 g/l.

The authentic expression of a Burgundy terroir

The estate

Officially founded in 1999, Domaine de la Vougeraie brings together the Boisset family's winegrowing heritage in France. Now led by Jean-Charles and Nathalie Boisset, the estate spans 52 hectares across the Côte de Nuits and the Côte de Beaune. This domaine stands out for its strong environmental commitment, making it the largest producer certified in organic and biodynamic farming in the Côte d'Or. Part of the vineyard is even worked using draft horses to help preserve the vitality of the soils.

The vineyard

The Clos Vougeot vineyard sits on a gently sloping hillside, at an altitude of between 240 and 265 metres. The vines thrive on a mosaic of soils: very stony and shallow on the upper section, becoming thicker and more clay-rich further down the slope. The subsoil consists of soft marls and hard limestone from the Middle Jurassic, covered with loam and scree.

The vintage

2023 began with a warm January, followed by a contrasting spring with a cool April. In late May, rising temperatures brought very favourable conditions for flowering. Summer was marked by a warm, dry June, a cooler July with regular rainfall, then an August marked by storms and intense heat that continued through to the harvest in September.

Winemaking and ageing

For this wine, vinification includes a measured proportion of whole bunches. Ageing then takes place over eighteen months in oak barrels, 30% of which are new.
