Characteristics and Tasting Notes for the Mercurey 1er Cru "Les Champs Martin" 2024 from Domaine Lorenzon
Tasting Notes
Colour
The colour reveals a beautiful deep ruby hue.
Nose
The nose exudes aromas of fresh red fruits, such as raspberry and redcurrant, mingled with notes of blackberry and cinnamon. Over time, subtle hints of undergrowth and cocoa emerge.
Palate
The palate offers lovely fruit concentration, supported by a taut, well-balanced acidity. The silky, elegant tannins carry the wine through to a remarkably long finish.
Food and Wine Pairing
This red wine pairs wonderfully with flavourful meats such as veal, veal sweetbreads, or lamb chops. It also goes very well with a traditional beef bourguignon as well as a selection of matured cheeses.
Serving and Ageing
To fully appreciate this Mercurey 1er Cru "Les Champs Martin" 2024, it is recommended to serve it at a temperature between 16 and 18°C, decanting it for thirty minutes to an hour while young. Built for ageing, it can be cellared until around 2034.
The Finesse and Depth of a Mercurey Red Wine
The Estate
Located in Burgundy, Domaine Lorenzon was officially founded in 1997 when Bruno Lorenzon, the current owner and technical director, took over the family estate. Spanning around ten hectares split between Mercurey and Montagny, the estate stands out for its highly precise approach to winegrowing. A firm advocate of organic, low-intervention viticulture, Bruno Lorenzon crafts authentic wines that faithfully express their terroir. His unique expertise in cooperage also allows him to design his own barrels, ensuring perfect control over the ageing process.
The Vineyard
The "Les Champs Martin" climat is one of the most emblematic terroirs of Mercurey. The vines benefit from an ideal south and south-east facing exposure, promoting optimal grape ripening. They are planted on very stony soils, made up of clay-limestone and calcareous marl. The estate practises certified organic viticulture here, with no use of herbicides for over thirty years. Vine training is characterised by a particularly high planting density, reaching 12,000 vines per hectare, along with strict yield limitation.
Winemaking and Ageing
The grapes for this Mercurey 1er Cru "Les Champs Martin" 2024 are hand-harvested into small crates to preserve the integrity of the berries. Vinification takes place with minimal intervention, without chaptalisation or acidification, and includes a significant proportion of whole-cluster fermentation, up to 75%. Long macerations allow for gentle extraction. The wine is then aged for thirteen months in oak barrels custom-made by the estate, around 30% of which are new, before a further five months of refinement in stainless steel tanks.
Grape Variety
100% Pinot Noir.
