Description
Characteristics and tasting notes for the 2022 Gevrey-Chambertin Village "Cuvée Bertin" from Domaine Virgile Lignier-Michelot
Tasting notes
Appearance
The colour reveals a deep, dark red hue.
Nose
The nose unveils a complex bouquet blending black and red fruit aromas, such as blackberry and plum, with floral notes of violet, lilac and rose petal. Subtle hints of sweet spices, white pepper and orange zest complete this rich aromatic palette.
Palate
On the palate, this wine offers a dense, succulent and harmonious texture. The tannic structure, both tight and elegant, is perfectly balanced by a lovely freshness. The lingering finish reveals a slight youthful austerity and a touch of noble rusticity.
Food and wine pairing
This 2022 Gevrey-Chambertin Village "Cuvée Bertin" pairs ideally with roasted or grilled red meats, such as a rib of beef. It also goes wonderfully well with characterful poultry such as duck, delicate game dishes, as well as soft, washed-rind cheeses like Époisses.
Serving and cellaring
For optimal enjoyment, this wine is best served at a temperature of around 15 to 16°C, ideally in a Burgundy-style glass. Decanting in its younger years helps release all its aromas. This 2022 Gevrey-Chambertin Village "Cuvée Bertin" can be enjoyed after a few years in the cellar and will continue to evolve favourably until around 2040.
The authentic and generous expression of a great Gevrey-Chambertin wine
The estate
Established in the early 20th century, around 1900, Domaine Virgile Lignier-Michelot is a key name in Burgundy. Located in Morey-Saint-Denis, this family-run estate spans around 12 hectares of vines spread across some of the finest terroirs of the Côte de Nuits. Now run by Laure and Virgile Lignier, the estate stands out for its environmentally respectful approach to viticulture and its remarkable mastery of whole-cluster winemaking. This philosophy gives rise to wines of great purity, faithfully reflecting the richness of their terroirs of origin in France.
The vineyard
This wine comes from the Gevrey-Chambertin appellation, from a one-hectare plot carefully spread across three lower- and mid-slope climats: Les Seuvrées, Les Murots and Creux Brouillards. Grown on predominantly clay-limestone soils, these old vines, cultivated using organic practices without herbicides, benefit from a high planting density. This demanding viticultural approach encourages moderate yields and natural concentration in the berries, expressing the full complexity of this terroir.
The vintage
The year 2022 was marked by warm climatic conditions offering generous ripeness. Rigorous management of yields and harvest dates resulted in perfectly balanced grapes, with stems ideally lignified for winemaking.
Winemaking and ageing
The grapes are hand-harvested, followed by a rigorous sorting process to retain only the finest bunches. This 2022 Gevrey-Chambertin Village "Cuvée Bertin" is vinified entirely in whole clusters, with gentle fermentations using indigenous yeasts. Ageing takes place in French oak barrels with a moderate proportion of new wood, before bottling without fining or filtration to preserve the wine's full texture.
Grape variety
100% Pinot Noir.
