Robert Parker

Yohan Castaing

The 2020 Saint-Joseph from Maison Guigal is still somewhat reserved, opening in the glass with aromas of licorice, black pepper and garrigue, mingled with notes of mulberry and dark berries. Medium- to full-bodied, supple and seamless, it’s elegant and juicy, concluding with a long, sapid and gently spicy finish. This is a fine, classically proportioned Saint-Joseph.

The medium-bodied 2020 Saint-Joseph unwinds with spice-box, cedar, black cherry and black plum aromatics. Offering solid flavor concentration neatly framed by ripe tannins, it concludes with drive on the juicy finish. Very elegant.

The 2020 Saint Joseph appellation is outstanding, offering juicy red and black fruits, some textbook Northern Rhône violet and peppery notes, medium body, fine tannins, and a beautifully balanced, elegant style that will drink well for a decade.

The structure and liveliness of a Rhône Valley red wine signed E.Guigal

The property

The E. Guigal Estate was founded in 1946 by Etienne Guigal, in Ampuis. His son, Marcel, took over in 1961. Today, the 3rd generation continues the heritage and values of this iconic family house in the Rhône Valley.

Côte-Rôtie, Condrieu, Hermitage, Châteauneuf-du-Pape, Saint-Joseph, Crozes-Hermitage, the E. Guigal estate oversees a mosaic of vineyards located in numerous appellations that form a range of wines of impeccable quality.

Over the vintages, the E. Guigal house has experienced strong development, notably becoming the owner in 1995 of the famous Château d’Ampuis, as well as several wine estates (Jean-Louis Grippat, Domaine de Vallouit, Domaine de Bonserine or even the Château de Nalys, in Châteauneuf-du-Pape).

The vineyard

A reference among the Saint Joseph wines, this cuvée comes from a vineyard planted on silico-limestone soils composed of mica schists whose alteration has given limestone, granitic and sandy-pebbly soils. Aged from 20 to 50 years, the vines are located very mainly in the municipalities of Tournon, Mauves and Sarras.

Vinification and aging

Alcoholic fermentations in stainless steel tanks at high temperature. The aging of 28 months is carried out in a second wine barrel.

Blend

100 % syrah.
