Description

Characteristics and Tasting Notes of Frédéric Esmonin's Gevrey-Chambertin "Village" 2023

Tasting

Appearance

The wine reveals a deep ruby hue that will evolve towards delicate garnet reflections over time.

Nose

The aromatic bouquet opens with intense notes of dark red fruits, black cherry and liquorice. Subtle earthy touches, graphite and gentle spices enrich this olfactory palette as it aerates.

Palate

Medium-bodied, this wine offers a silky texture carried by refined tannins. A lovely acidity reminiscent of cherry skin brings freshness and highlights a beautifully elegant mineral structure.

Food and wine pairings

This red wine will pair wonderfully with duck lacquered in orange or honey, roasted feathered game such as guinea fowl or pheasant, as well as braised meats. It will also elevate dishes featuring wild mushrooms and can be enjoyed with characterful cheeses such as Époisses, Langres or Saint-Nectaire.

Serving and cellaring

To fully appreciate the Gevrey-Chambertin "Village" 2023, it is recommended to serve it at a temperature between 14 and 16°C. In its youth, decanting for thirty to sixty minutes is advised to soften the tannins. This wine can be enjoyed now or cellared until around 2038.

The Elegance and Authenticity of a Gevrey-Chambertin Wine by Domaine Frédéric Esmonin

The estate

Founded in 1988, Domaine Frédéric Esmonin is a family-run estate located in the heart of Gevrey-Chambertin, in Burgundy. Now led by Frédéric Esmonin, supported by his father André in the vineyard, the property extends over about ten acres. The estate stands out for its environmentally respectful approach, favouring integrated pest management and mechanical soil work. Skilfully combining the roles of independent winegrower and négociant, the Esmonin family crafts authentic wines that express all the finesse of the great terroirs of the Côte de Nuits.

The vineyard

The vines dedicated to this cuvée thrive on the illustrious Gevrey-Chambertin appellation, in the north of the Côte de Nuits. The terroir rests on a Jurassic limestone bedrock, covered with brown calcareous and marly soils offering excellent drainage. Benefiting from an east and south-east exposure at an altitude ranging between 280 and 330 metres, the vines enjoy ideal sunshine. The vineyard has been cultivated without synthetic herbicides for more than a decade, with regular ploughing and winter organic amendments to preserve soil vitality. Harvesting is entirely manual.

The vintage

The 2023 vintage is characterised by a growing cycle offering a fine balance between ripeness and freshness. Unlike years marked by excessive heat, this season allowed a beautiful natural acidity to be preserved, favouring the expression of fresh red fruit aromas and lovely minerality without tipping into excessive concentration.

Winemaking and aging

After careful destemming, the berries undergo a cold maceration of four to five days to extract colour and aromas while preserving the freshness of the fruit. The Gevrey-Chambertin "Village" 2023 is then aged in French oak barrels (sourced from the forests of Allier and Nevers) for fourteen to seventeen months, with a proportion of 20 to 50% new barrels. The wine is finally bottled without any filtration in order to retain all its complexity and texture.

Grape variety

100% Pinot Noir.
