Decanter

A wine of great intensity and concentration, offering aromas of grapefruit and passionfruit with suggestions of acacia flowers and spice. The texture shows impressive density, but the crisp acidity ensures that this stays lively and dynamic on the palate. The grapes are from the hectare the Chartron family owns here; they were lightly crushed and gently pressed before fermentation in cask (30% new). This will open more in five to seven years and should drink well for at least another 30.

Characteristics and tasting notes of the Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru "Clos du Cailleret" 2023 by Jean Chartron

Tasting

Colour
The wine reveals a pale gold hue enhanced by subtle green reflections.

Nose
The nose displays a beautiful aromatic complexity, blending notes of fresh citrus and white flowers with delicate touches of fresh almonds, all underlined by a fine minerality and subtle toasted accents.

Palate
Full and perfectly balanced, the palate charms with its mineral freshness and elegant structure, extending towards a finish of remarkable length.

Food and wine pairings

This wine pairs wonderfully with fish in sauce or grilled, as well as roasted or braised poultry. It also perfectly accompanies mature cheeses such as Comté or Cîteaux, or regional specialities like a vol-au-vent or pike quenelles.

Serving and cellaring

To fully appreciate this Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru "Clos du Cailleret" 2023, it is recommended to serve it at a temperature between 13 and 14°C, opening the bottle three hours before tasting without decanting it. This wine can be enjoyed now or kept in the cellar to be drunk until around 2033.

The mineral elegance of a great white Burgundy wine by Jean Chartron

The estate

Founded in 1859 by Jean-Édouard Dupard, the Jean Chartron estate is a true institution in Burgundy. Located in the heart of the famous village of Puligny-Montrachet, the estate developed thanks to a historic family alliance. Today, the fifth generation, embodied by Jean-Michel and Anne-Laure Chartron, watches over this exceptional heritage. Driven by a deep respect for tradition and the environment, they craft wines that express with accuracy and authenticity the singularity of their terroirs, while favouring a measured use of oak during ageing.

The vineyard

The Climat of Clos du Cailleret holds a prime position within the Puligny-Montrachet appellation. Resting on a gentle south-east-facing slope, this terroir enjoys ideal sunshine. The vines, averaging 40 years of age, thrive on soils composed of clay and limestone, scattered with pebbles and gravel that give the wine its characteristic minerality. The vineyard is managed according to the principles of organic farming, with meticulous soil work and rigorous management of the plant.

The vintage

The 2023 vintage benefited from ideal climatic conditions. After an early budbreak in early April, the mild spring encouraged a beautiful flowering, supported by regular rainfall. The summer proved hot, with cool nights and moderate precipitation that helped avoid any water stress. These optimal conditions led to a harvest carried out under radiant sunshine at the beginning of September.

Winemaking and ageing

The making of the Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru "Clos du Cailleret" 2023 begins with fermentation in oak barrels. Ageing then takes place on fine lees for twelve months in barrels, 30% of which are new and 70% between one and five years old. The wine is finally transferred to stainless steel tanks for an additional four-month refining period before bottling.

Grape variety

100% Chardonnay.
