Description

Characteristics and tasting advice for the Riesling Erbacher Marcobrunn Trocken Grosses Gewächs 2017 from Kloster Eberbach

Tasting

Appearance

The wine shows a relatively intense golden-yellow hue, reflecting fine concentration and optimal ripeness of the grapes at harvest.

Nose

The aromatic bouquet reveals remarkable complexity, with notes of ripe yellow fruits alongside hallmark aromas of petrol, beeswax, and ripe mango. Mineral touches of tobacco and floral nuances further enhance this sophisticated aromatic profile.

Palate

On the palate, this Riesling offers a powerful, concentrated structure wrapped in a silky texture. The palate unfolds a generous basket of ripe fruit, perfectly balanced. The finish stands out for its remarkable length and aromatic persistence.

Food and wine pairings

This dry Riesling pairs harmoniously with fresh salads, seafood, and poultry. It also goes beautifully with Asian cuisine, notably Thai curries or Chinese sweet-and-sour dishes. With cheese, it matches perfectly with fresh goat cheese or more full-flavored cheeses such as Munster or Roquefort.

Serving and cellaring

The Riesling Erbacher Marcobrunn Trocken Grosses Gewächs 2017 can be enjoyed until around 2026. It is recommended to serve it between 8 and 10°C to fully appreciate its aromatic complexity.

A Rheingau Riesling from an exceptional terroir

The estate

Founded in 1136 by Saint Bernard of Clairvaux, Kloster Eberbach stands out as one of Germany’s most important wine estates, with 238 hectares of vineyards spread between the Rheingau and the Hessian Bergstraße. Owned by the State of Hesse since 1945, the estate is now managed by Hessische Staatsweingüter GmbH Kloster Eberbach, under the direction of Christine Müller since January 2026. Backed by nine centuries of winemaking tradition, Kloster Eberbach combines historic excellence with a contemporary commitment to environmental sustainability, as evidenced by its ECO-STEP certification.

The vineyard

The Erbacher Marcobrunn vineyard, documented since 1390, is among the oldest vineyards of monastic origin in the Rheingau. Classified VDP.GROSSE LAGE®, this exceptional terroir covers 7.1 hectares on a due-south exposure, with slopes reaching up to 25%. The soils are composed of silt and lime-rich loess over a clay subsoil, giving the Riesling a distinctive minerality and a very pronounced structure characteristic of this great Rheingau terroir.

The vintage

The year 2017 in Germany was marked by an early harvest and low yields due to spring frosts. Mid-July rains increased pressure from fungal diseases. However, meticulous producers who took the risk of harvesting very late and selected only the healthiest grapes were rewarded with outstanding Riesling wines, combining remarkable concentration with preserved freshness.

Winemaking and aging

The Riesling Erbacher Marcobrunn Trocken Grosses Gewächs 2017 was crafted using the most rigorous traditional methods. The grapes, hand-harvested at optimal ripeness, come exclusively from the vineyard’s finest parcels. Winemaking follows the quality principles set by the VDP Grosses Gewächs classification, ensuring the authentic expression of this exceptional terroir. The label bears the mention “Gutsabfüllung aus dem Cabinetkeller”, a historic reference to the cabinet cellars dedicated to the estate’s most prestigious wines since 1730.
