Vinum

Finely spicy, peppery, herbal, red fruit; velvety on the palate, you want to swallow right away, the fruit is crisp, and the powdery tannins provide drive and length. An excellent Saint-Émilion for little money.

Decanter

Ripe and sweet damsons on the nose, dark fruit and some floral hints – quite an expressive nose. Supple and agile, with nice energy and lovely succulence of cool blue fruit with some ripe red cherries. Really juicy but not lean or too high in acidity. Easy to enjoy. Lifted, fresh, no rough edges. No harshness; everything is balanced and harmonious. A light but enjoyable glass. 15% of the massal-selection Cabernet Franc went into this blend, with some grapes from the limestone plateau making their wine into this second wine for the first time. Ageing: 20% new oak, then one- and two-year barrels.

Sweet cherries and flowers shape the character here. On the palate, the medium-bodied, charming wine is forward, fresh, and sweet, making it simply delicious on release, easy to enjoy in a bistro or café. The wine was made from blending 85% Merlot with 15% Cabernet Franc. The wine comes from a parcel selection. Drink from 2026-2032. 89-91 pts.

Le Figaro Vin

Score: 89–91. A deep, unusual nose of juicy black fruits and licorice. On the palate, the wine feels very zen and balanced, with lovely fluidity and good length.

Vertdevin

A lovely, airy nose offering a fine, precise texture and a certain power, all with great accuracy. Notes of juicy blackberry, juicy wild blackcurrant and, more lightly, blueberry mingle with touches of fresh Madagascar pepper, a hint of violet and blueberry, and a subtle touch of spice. The palate is nicely fresh, mineral and balanced, with lovely juiciness, a gourmand character, a bright acid-driven backbone, energy, harmony, a fleshy feel and tension. Lovely freshness and vibrant fruit. On the palate, the wine reveals notes of juicy, pulpy blackberry, juicy, vibrant raspberry and, more lightly, juicy, fresh purple plum, alongside touches of blueberry and a subtle hint of star anise and toasted almond. Good length. A subtle, supple note and pleasing savouriness on the finish/persistence.

A fresh and indulgent Second wine from Saint-Émilion

The estate

The major peculiarity of the Clos Fourtet, this Premier Grand Cru Classé from Saint-Émilion, is to be qualified as a clos. In a constant search for excellence, Clos Fourtet and the Cuvelier family practice sustainable agriculture, mindful of respecting natural balances.

The vineyard

La Closerie de Fourtet is a Saint-Émilion wine from a 5-hectare plot. The vines, averaging 25 years old, are planted on clay-limestone soils typical of Saint-Émilion. It is the second wine of Clos Fourtet.

The vintage

A cool winter with sufficient rainfall to recharge the soil's water reserves gives way to a mild spring that promotes beautiful flowering. The alternation of high temperatures with rainy episodes leads to high sanitary pressure. If the dry and moderate conditions at the beginning of August help to preserve the freshness of the grapes, the high temperatures in mid-August and early September ensure optimal maturity of the berries. The 2023 vintage is the third earliest of the last 20 years.

Vinification and ageing

Fermentation of the berries in thermo-regulated stainless steel tanks, then extraction by manual punching down. The maceration period is 21 to 28 days. Malolactic fermentation in tanks and barrels. Ageing from 14 to 18 months in barrels (15% new and 83% of one and two wines) and 2% in amphorae.

Blend

Merlot (85%)
Cabernet Franc (15%).
