Description
The power of a Rhone blend in a California wine
The Sagacious 2012 from Law Estate Wines is an example of what the Paso Robles area in California can best produce in a surprising blend of grape varieties typical of the Rhône Valley region.
Law Estate Wines is the story of a couple, Don and Susie Law, who are both passionate about Rhône wine blends. The Law Estate Wines' vineyards are located near Peachy Canyon Road, west of the Paso Robles area that is between San Francisco and Los Angeles. The vineyards are on sloping hills at elevations of 500 to 600 metres above sea level with excellent sun exposure. The plot diversity consists of an exceptional terroir of calcareous soils and a variety of micro-climates in the area, and this diversity is the key to the richness and complexity of Law Estates Wines.
Because of the unique know-how of the estate winemakers, the Sagacious 2012 from Law Estate Wines aptly represents the style that the owners wanted to achieve: to produce world-class ultra-premium wines from a very limited production that expresses the richness of their terroir through the incomparable fruit quality.
The blend consists of 39% Mourvèdre, 35% Syrah and 26% Grenache. The Sagacious 2012 from Law Estate Wines combines the power and complexity of Rhône blends, and imprints the character of its birthplace, Paso Robles.
At tasting, the Sagacious 2012 reveals the full extent of its multifaceted personality and evolves constantly. At first, the nose opens with blackberry and black cherry notes, and then gives way to warm, spicy cardamom and clove notes punctuated with a touch of aniseed. On the palate, the attack shows all the vivacity of the wine. A racy mouthfeel gives a dense and full texture, along with an incredible roundness that is balanced with a lovely acidity. The slightly chalky finish is reminiscent of the limestone minerality of the terroir. Already full of energy and power, this Rhône blend will evolve to give more finesse and depth. It can be cellared up until 2023.
