Description

Characteristics and tasting notes of the Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru 2021 by Louis Jadot

Tasting

Appearance
The robe reveals a deep hue, oscillating between ruby and rich garnet.

Nose
The nose opens with a beautiful aromatic intensity dominated by notes of ripe red and black berries, reminiscent of blackcurrant. With aeration, it reveals floral and spicy touches, foreshadowing a future evolution towards complex nuances of undergrowth, liquorice, leather and musk.

Palate
Ample and structured, the palate stands out for its freshness and tension, characteristic of this climatic year. The tannins, initially firm in their youth, prove capable of melding harmoniously to offer a velvety texture. The finish is generous, long and remarkably precise.

Food and wine pairings

This red Grand Cru pairs beautifully with dishes of character such as feathered and furred game (venison, pheasant, wild boar, hare) and pan-fried wild mushrooms like morels or porcini. It will also enhance aged beef, umami-rich dishes, or refined Asian cuisine such as Peking duck or braised pork with mild spices.

Serving and cellaring

For optimal tasting, it is recommended to serve this wine between 16 and 18°C in large red wine glasses. Decanting for one to two hours is advisable in its youth to release its aromas. Built for ageing, this Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru 2021 will reveal all its complexity after about ten years in the cellar and can be kept until around 2036.

The elegance and freshness of a Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru

The estate

Founded in 1859 by Louis Henry Denis Jadot, the Louis Jadot House is a leading institution in Burgundy. Based in the heart of Beaune, it now enjoys international renown. Currently owned by the Kopf family, the House is run by the Gagey family. Both a négociant and the owner of an extensive vineyard, Louis Jadot stands out for its faithfulness to the classic expression of terroirs and its growing commitment to sustainable viticulture, producing wines of great consistency.

The vineyard

The Charmes-Chambertin climat is a vast Grand Cru located in the commune of Gevrey-Chambertin, in the northern part of the Côte de Nuits. The vines benefit from an ideal east and south-east exposure, promoting a gradual ripening of the grapes. They thrive on brown limestone soils resting on a Jurassic bedrock, subtly interwoven with marls and clays. This singular terroir gives the wines a beautiful richness on the palate while preserving great elegance.

The vintage

The 2021 year was particularly demanding for Burgundy winegrowers. The growing cycle began with a severe episode of spring frost that greatly impacted yields. The season continued with unstable weather, marked by rainfall and strong disease pressure. Despite these climatic challenges, meticulous work in the vineyard allowed the harvest of berries that reached beautiful phenolic maturity.

Winemaking and ageing

Faithful to the House's classic approach, the vinification of Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru 2021 favours measured extraction to respect the raw material. Fermentations take place in wooden or stainless-steel vats, with a proportion of whole clusters adapted to the characteristics of the year. The wine then benefits from patient ageing in French oak barrels for 18 to 20 months, with controlled use of new oak so as not to mask the identity of the terroir.
