A Meursault Premier Cru from the Legendary Genevrières Climat
The Estate
Founded in 1797 by Jean Latour, Louis Latour is an independent benchmark house in Burgundy, currently headed by Louis-Fabrice Latour, with the eleventh generation, represented by Eléonore Latour, waiting in the wings. Based in Aloxe-Corton, the house owns 50 hectares of vines, including 28.63 hectares of Grands Crus, making it the largest Grand Cru estate in Burgundy. A visionary who planted Chardonnay on the Corton-Charlemagne hill in the wake of the phylloxera crisis, Louis Latour combines the excellence of an estate with the expertise of a négociant, carrying forward nearly three centuries of family winemaking know-how.
The Vineyard
The Genevrières climat is one of the most renowned plots in Meursault, lying on the Puligny-Montrachet side of the appellation. Its name comes from the juniper (genévrier in French), a needle-leaved shrub bearing purple berries that once thrived on these limestone soils before being replaced by Chardonnay. The vines, averaging 35 years of age, are rooted in marl and limestone soils. Farmed traditionally, the vineyard yields an average of 40 hectolitres per hectare, and the grapes are harvested by hand.
Winemaking and Ageing
The Meursault 1er Cru "Genevrières" 2023 is vinified traditionally in oak barrels, with full alcoholic fermentation followed by complete malolactic fermentation. The wine is then aged for 8 to 10 months in medium-toast French oak barrels from the Tonnellerie Louis Latour, 50% of which are new.
Grape Variety
This white Burgundy is made exclusively from Chardonnay.
