Wine Spectator

Bruce Sanderson

Though supple and laced with black cherry, raspberry, violet and spice flavors, this has a solid underlying structure. Dark and a bit brooding now, this shows fine equilibrium and length. Best from 2024 through 2033. 125 cases made, 25 cases imported.

James Suckling

Tantalizing spiciness—allspice, clove, and a touch of cinnamon—is married to a deep well of blackberry fruit. Enormous concentration, but this is the opposite of over-extraction. Really blows out at the finish, shooting off into the distance. Drinkable now, but best from 2024.

Description

Characteristics and tasting tips for Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru "Les Chaumes" 2020 by Louis Latour

Tasting

Appearance
Deep, intense color with pronounced garnet highlights.

Nose
Aromatic bouquet of great richness and complexity, combining smoky, toasted and nutmeg notes along with ripe black cherry.

Palate
On the palate, the texture is broad, silky and structured, carried by persistent aromas of black cherry, licorice and pepper. The finish, remarkably fresh, stretches out with lightness and elegance.

Serving and cellaring

For optimal enjoyment, serve between 59 and 63°F. This Burgundy wine can rest in the cellar until around 2030 to fully express its array of aromatic nuances.

Food and wine pairings

This wine pairs beautifully with boeuf mironton, rabbit with chanterelles, venison with lingonberries, or aged cheeses.

A generous and velvety red wine from Burgundy

The estate

The largest winegrowing estate in Burgundy, Domaine Louis Latour boasts a winemaking history spanning over 200 years. Spread across the finest Premier and Grand Cru plots from the Côte de Beaune to the Côte de Nuits, the estate’s 50 hectares yield a range of wines from 130 appellations, each expressing with authenticity and refinement the characteristics of its original terroir.

A renowned Burgundian estate, Louis Latour has been actively committed since 1996 to a conscientious and environmentally respectful viticulture.

The vineyard

This cuvée is a Vosne-Romanée wine from the "Les Chaumes" parcel, located at the same elevation as the village of Vosne-Romanée and north of Nuits-Saint-Georges. The vines, averaging 30 years old, are grown on clay-limestone soils. The term "Chaumes" indicates that it was uncultivated land before becoming a vineyard.

Winemaking and aging

Hand harvesting. Traditional fermentation in open vats. 10 to 12 months of aging in oak barrels, 40% of which are new.

Grape variety

Pinot Noir (100%)
