Characteristics and Tasting Notes of the Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru "Referts" 2024 by Olivier Leflaive
Tasting
Appearance
The robe of this white wine reveals a pale golden hue, enhanced by beautiful saturation and a vibrant brilliance.
Nose
The bouquet opens with indulgent pastry notes evoking brioche, warm bread and candied fruits. This richness is quickly balanced by the freshness of citrus zest, offering a mature, exuberant and complex aromatic profile.
Palate
Ample and juicy, the palate charms with its elegance and textured relief. Subtle touches of dried fruits and green tea further enrich the tasting experience. The whole is carried by a magnificent freshness that draws the wine towards a lingering finish, the result of a natural and masterfully controlled concentration.
Food and wine pairings
The estate recommends pairing this wine with sweetbreads or a mushroom vol-au-vent. More generally, it will pair perfectly with white meats served with a creamy, forest-inspired sauce.
Serving and cellaring
To fully appreciate the Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru "Referts" 2024, it is recommended to serve it at a temperature between 12 and 14 °C. This wine possesses a beautiful structure and can be enjoyed from 2027 through to around 2036.
The authentic expression of a Premier Cru from Puligny-Montrachet
The estate
Officially founded in 1984, the Olivier Leflaive House is a leading figure in Burgundy, located in the heart of Puligny-Montrachet. Although the family's winegrowing history dates back to 1717, it was this modern creation that propelled the estate forward. A pioneer, the property adopted biodynamics as early as 1993 on its Grands Crus. Today, the company is led by Olivier Leflaive as general manager, joined by his brother Patrick as president, while winemaking is orchestrated by Solène Panigai. The estate stands out for its respect for the terroir.
The vineyard
The "Referts" climat is a Premier Cru of Puligny-Montrachet stretching across 5.52 hectares. Located at an altitude of between 230 and 250 metres, the vines, averaging 46 years old, thrive on a singular clay-limestone soil. The upper section is dominated by marl, while the deeper layers reveal ferruginous nuances. This terroir, separated from the famous Meursault plots by the Chemin des Moines, is managed through sustainable viticulture, with fully manual harvests.
The vintage
The year 2024 was particularly demanding due to record rainfall and constant humidity throughout the growing cycle. This high cryptogamic pressure had a considerable impact on yields. Nevertheless, the harvested grapes managed to retain remarkable freshness and brightness, transforming the season's weather challenges into a genuine qualitative success.
Winemaking and aging
Upon their arrival at the cellar, the whole bunches are not destemmed prior to pressing. After a static settling of twenty-four hours, the alcoholic and malolactic fermentations of the Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru "Referts" 2024 take place in oak barrels. The aging extends over eighteen months in total, including twelve months in barrels (comprising 22% new oak) and six months in stainless steel tanks, allowing the balance and complexity of the wine to be preserved.
Grape variety
100% Chardonnay.
