A charming and spontaneous Saint-Estephe Red
Produced since 1994, Les Pagodes de Cos is the second wine from Chateau Cos d'Estournel. The vineyard is located in the northern Medoc, in the Saint-Estephe appellation. Vines are, on average, 35 years old and planted on soil that is mostly clay. The blend of the 2016 vintage is 50% Cabernet Sauvignon, 46.5% Merlot, 3% Petit Verdot and .5% Cabernet Franc. The second wine of Cos d'Estournel is aged in barrels, 30% are new.
Les Pagodes de Cos 2016 is a wine of pleasure, combining balance and voluptuousness. This wine is alluring, with an unmatchable aromatic precision of black fruits. In the mouth, the tannic structure is structured with refreshing smoothness. The wine is so full and fresh, that you would think you were eating the grape. Pure joy. A wine that is very accessible at this stage, and has one of the most interesting guarding potentials.
Wine Advocate-Parker :
The 2016 Les Pagodes de Cos is a blend of 50% Cabernet Sauvignon, 46.5% Merlot, 3% Petit Verdot and a splash of Cabernet Franc, delivering 13.02% alcohol and matured in 30% new oak. It has an intense bouquet with aromas of blackcurrant, bilberry, graphite and a touch of sea salt (just a nod to the Gironde Estuary perhaps?). The palate is medium-bodied with crisp tannin, quite sleek in the mouth with plenty of black fruit tinged with graphite. It has a little more persistence compared to the 2015 Pagodes last year from barrel, very harmonious with a twist of bitter black cherry and tobacco on the finish. Very fineùdrink from two or three years in bottle.
