The property
Founded in 1970, Stag's Leap Wine Cellars has become over the vintages a reference among the great wines of Napa Valley. Pioneers, the founders of the estate replanted a plot then in orchard with vines including a majority of cabernet sauvignon, a grape then very little used locally. This is the beginning of an unparalleled revolution marking the history of American wines.
A few years later, Stag's Leap Wine Cellars won, blind, the contest for the best cabernet sauvignon at the famous "Judgment of Paris" in 1976, ahead of prestigious French wines. The legend of the estate is created.
Since 2007, Stag's Leap Wine Cellars is under the joint direction of the American estate Ste. Michelle Wine Estates and the Antinori family.
The wine
Artemis is named after the Greek goddess of the hunt. This choice reflects the estate's constant quest to, in addition to its own vineyards, select the most beautiful grapes from Napa Valley, through a network of independent producers, in order to produce an exceptional cabernet sauvignon. This skilful blend of a mosaic of vineyards gives birth to a fruity wine revealing a rare balance between structure and elegance.
The vintage
A dry winter precedes a spring whose rainfall disrupts flowering before a hot and dry summer. Despite relatively low yields, the grapes are of very good quality.
Vinification and ageing
This wine is aged for 14 months, part of which in new barrels (50% French, 4% American) and the rest in French oak barrels of several wines.
Blend
Cabernet sauvignon (99%)
Merlot (1%).
