The Mineral Elegance of a Great Chassagne-Montrachet Wine

The Estate

Founded in 1980 by Vincent Girardin from two hectares of vines, the eponymous house has become a true institution in Burgundy. Located at the heart of the Côte de Beaune, it now oversees a vineyard of some thirty hectares. Since 2012, the estate has belonged to the Compagnie des Vins d'Autrefois, chaired by Jean-Pierre Nié. Under the technical direction of Éric Germain, the estate continues a philosophy that respects the terroir, combining biodynamic practices with highly precise winemaking, which earned it the title of Négociant of the Year in 2023.

The Vineyard

This Premier Cru comes from the famous Morgeot climat, located to the south of the Chassagne-Montrachet appellation. The vines, averaging around forty years old, thrive on complex soils composed of chalk and limestone on the surface, resting on deeper layers of clay rich in iron oxides. All of these plots are cultivated according to the principles of biodynamics, with official certification, thereby fostering biodiversity and soil vitality without any chemical inputs.

The Vintage

The year 2023 stands out for its particularly mild climatic conditions. Spring favoured ideal vegetative growth, spared from frost. Summer then brought warm days, conducive to optimal berry ripening, balanced by cool nights, essential for preserving lovely acidity and the aromatic freshness of the grapes.

Winemaking and Aging

After an entirely manual harvest and rigorous sorting, the grapes for this Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru "Morgeot" 2023 are gently pressed. Fermentation takes place using indigenous yeasts in French oak barrels, a small proportion of which are new. The wine then undergoes an extended aging period of eighteen months on fine lees, with no lees stirring, allowing for spontaneous malolactic fermentation. The final blend is made in tank one month before a light filtration and bottling timed according to the lunar calendar.

Grape Variety

100% Chardonnay.
