Description

Characteristics and Tasting Notes for Vincent Girardin's Volnay 2023

Tasting

Colour
Displaying beautiful intensity, the wine shows a vivid ruby colour with garnet highlights.

Nose
The bouquet opens with vibrant aromas of cherry, violet and rose. It then reveals mineral and earthy nuances, complemented by delicate spicy notes of cinnamon and white pepper.

Palate
The attack is fresh, introducing a palate of moderate body and velvety tannins. Flavours of cherry and redcurrant intertwine with a subtle minerality, leading into a warm and lingering finish.

Food and Wine Pairing

This red wine pairs beautifully with roasted poultry, white meats such as veal, or feathered game like quail. It also works very well with mushroom risotto, freshwater fish in cream sauce, and pressed cooked-curd cheeses such as Comté or Gruyère.

Service and Storage

For optimal enjoyment, it is recommended to serve this Volnay 2023 at a temperature of around 16°C. This wine can be enjoyed young but will continue to evolve favourably over the next 5 to 10 years or so.

The Elegance and Finesse of a Red Burgundy

The Estate

Founded in 1980 by Vincent Girardin from two hectares of family-owned vines, the house has established itself as a benchmark in Burgundy. Based in Meursault, the estate expanded into négociant activity in 1992. Since 2012, the structure has evolved: the négociant business now belongs to the Compagnie des Vins d'Autrefois, chaired by Jean-Pierre Nié, the current owner. General management is overseen by Éric Germain. Committed to biodynamics, Domaine Vincent Girardin was named négociant of the year in 2023, in recognition of its respect for terroir.

The Vineyard

The grapes come from old-vine plots with an average age of 65 years, located on the south-east-facing slope of the village of Volnay. The lieux-dits "Les Blanches", "Les Grands Champs" and "Pluchots" rest on iron-rich Bathonian limestone soils covered with brown silt. The vineyard, situated between 230 and 370 metres in altitude, is cultivated according to biodynamic principles, without synthetic herbicides or insecticides, favouring manual work and high trellising.

The Vintage

The year 2023 was marked by record-breaking temperatures, standing out as the hottest season on record in the region. This heat called for rigorous canopy management and early harvesting in order to preserve the natural acidity and freshness of the berries.

Winemaking and Ageing

The grapes for this Volnay 2023 are harvested entirely by hand, followed by careful sorting of the bunches. Fermentation takes place using indigenous yeasts, with no temperature control. The wine is then aged in used French oak barrels, deliberately limiting the use of new wood to preserve the pure expression of the fruit.
