Robert Parker

William Kelley

The 2017 Beaune 1er Cru Les Grèves Vigne de l'Enfant Jesus is showing well, wafting from the glass with aromas of smoky cherry and blackberry fruit that mingle with nuances of incense, spices and baking chocolate. On the palate, the wine is medium to full-bodied, velvety and supple, with a nicely concentrated core of sapid fruit, succulent acids and quite a long, harmonious finish. This has come together very nicely since I tasted it from barrel in early December.

Wine Spectator

Bruce Sanderson

Lush and juicy, this red delivers plum, black cherry, sweet spice and toasty oak flavors on a soft frame. Dense, showing fine balance and length. Drink now through 2030. 150 cases imported.

Decanter

Bouchard Père’s historic 4ha parcel at the center of this excellent premier cru is the “filet mignon” of Grèves, according to Frédéric Weber. Owned by the négociant since 1791, this is an intense, aromatic, engagingly floral Pinot Noir with 15% whole clusters and 30% new wood, well supported by tannins and balancing acidity.

The 2017 Beaune Grèves Vigne de l'Enfant Jesus 1er Cru does not quite deliver the complexity I expected on the nose, and it needs more pedigree given the climat in question. The palate is well balanced with sappy red fruit, quite ripe and generous on the finish; however, even it needs more precision and personality. Given my more positive score from barrel, I wonder if this is entering a dumb phase. Tasted blind at the Burgfest 2017 tasting.

Bettane+Desseauve

It has gained a touch more textural smoothness; the tannin is a true caress—long, flavorful, almost infused—but the longevity of this terroir is deceptive: this ease, this poise will still be there in twenty years!

Wine Enthusiast

Roger Voss

This tight wine is firm with tannins and still very young. With a backdrop of dense black fruits and acidity, its potential is considerable. With this promise and richness, the wine needs aging. Drink from 2024.

Description

An aromatic and delicate red wine from Burgundy

The producer

Bouchard Père & Fils was founded in Beaune in 1731. With almost three centuries of history, Bouchard Père & Fils is one of the oldest wine houses in Burgundy. At the head of an exceptional estate in the Côte d'Or, the 9th generation of the family still perpetuates today this unique know-how in the art of making great Burgundy wines .

The vineyard

Patiently built up over the years, the vineyards of the Bouchard Père et Fils estate now spread over 130 hectares of vines. Bringing together prestigious appellations with exceptional plots, the Bouchard Père & Fils vineyard represents a unique wine heritage in Burgundy.

The wine

This Beaune 1er cru "Grèves Vigne de L'Enfant Jésus" Domaine 2017 from Bouchard Père & Fils takes its name from a historical anecdote linked to the Carmelite Marguerite du Saint-Sacrement. Indeed, she is said to have predicted the birth of the future King of France despite the infertility of his mother, Anne of Austria. This vineyard took the name of "Vigne de L'Enfant Jésus" following the birth of Louis XIV. Sold in 1791 during the sale of national assets, this terroir, with an east/south-east exposure on very gravelly clay-limestone soil, has since been the monopoly of the Bouchard Père & Fils company.

The vinification and ageing

Hand-picked, the grapes are rigorously sorted and totally or partially destemmed depending on the vintage. Fermentation in small containers. Soft pressing. Vatting for 12 to 15 days. The wine is aged for 8 to 13 months in French oak barrels (20 to 60% of which are new) in the Bastion cellars of the old Château de Beaune.

The blend

The Beaune 1er cru "Grèves Vigne de L'Enfant Jésus" Domaine 2017 of Bouchard Père & Fils is a 100% Pinot Noir.

The tasting

Nose

The aromas blend delicious fruity and spicy fragrances with subtle woody notes conferred due to the ageing in barrels.

Palate

Intense, the palate seduces due to its delicacy and its silky touch.

Storage

Available today, this Burgundy wine can be kept in the cellar until around 2027 in order to reveal its full aromatic range.

Food and wine pairing

This wine goes perfectly with game birds, chicken in a creamy sauce or Burgundian cheeses.

Service

For an optimal tasting experience, serve between 17°C and 18°C.
