Robert Parker

William Kelley

The 2019 Beaune 1er Cru Les Grèves Vigne de l'Enfant Jesus is showing beautifully, bursting from the glass with scents of raspberries, warm spices, plums and incense. Medium to full-bodied, sumptuous and enveloping, with an ample core of fruit and supple, melting tannins, it's immensely charming and gourmand. I can't remember an Enfant Jesus that tasted so good, so young.

Wine Spectator

Bruce Sanderson

Though taut and reticent in its aromas and flavors, this red builds on the palate to a long finish. Black cherry and sandalwood notes are the main themes, while toasty oak and a graphite element linger on the aftertaste. This feels like a thoroughbred ready to run. Best from 2023 through 2035. 150 cases imported.

Decanter

From Jeroboam. Bouchard purchased the site in 1791 and now hold 3.92ha. Fred Weber describes the vineyard as the 'fillet mignon' within Beaune-Grèves. Not surprisingly given the age/bottle size, primary characters are very dominant but there is clearly massive potential here. As the wine breathes, lovely aromas of raspberry/blackberry and violets evolve. Rich, ripe, pure dark fruit on the palate, subtle oak, mouthfilling and concentrated, with silky tannin and vibrant acidity providing the structure for long-term ageing. A great vintage and a great Beaune Premier Cru.

James Suckling

What a fragrant nose of flowers, cherries, licorice and delicate spice! Very elegant and lacy on the medium-bodied palate with breathtaking integration of fine fruit and fine tannins. Super-silky, long finish that’s very sensual. Drink or hold.

The 2019 Beaune Les Grèves Vigne de l'Enfant Jesus 1er Cru has a much more understated bouquet—low-key and more tertiary in style, with finely delineated dark cherries and hints of bergamot tea mixed with bay leaf. The palate is medium-bodied with smooth tannins. Quite a polished Beaune Grèves, there is a sumptuousness to this wine with a lightly spiced finish, though it doesn't quite have the complexity or minerality of its peers. I've had better bottles. Tasted blind at the Burgfest tasting.

Tasting

Appearance

The wine displays a bright ruby hue with garnet highlights, reflecting beautiful maturity without excess.

Nose

The bouquet opens with aromas of stewed cherries and candied red fruits, supported by notes of kirsch and sweet spices. With aeration, the nose reveals an earthy minerality characteristic of the appellation, enhanced by subtle hints of undergrowth and humus.

Palate

The attack is supple and fleshy, unveiling a silky, harmonious texture. The tannic structure, ripe and fine, delivers lovely density while preserving great elegance. The vintage’s vibrant acidity brings lift and energy, while the finish lingers on fruity and slightly oaky notes.

Food and wine pairings

This Beaune 2019 is a perfect match for roast poultry, feathered game or fine charcuterie. It also pairs well with snails, savory pies or warm pâtés. For cheeses, opt for aged Brie or Reblochon.

Serving and cellaring

A sunny, generous Beaune wine from Bouchard Père & Fils

The estate

Founded in 1731 by Michel Bouchard, Bouchard Père & Fils is one of Burgundy’s leading wine institutions, with nearly three centuries of history. The estate now farms around 130 hectares spread across numerous climats in the Côte d'Or, including a significant concentration of Premier and Grand Crus. Acquired in 2022 by Artémis Domaines, Bouchard Père & Fils remains one of the leading owners of Beaune Premier Crus, embodying contemporary Burgundian excellence.

The vineyard

The vines in Beaune benefit from prime exposures, mainly facing east and southeast, on mineral-rich clay-limestone soils. This geological composition gives the wines a distinctive minerality and beautiful finesse. Bouchard Père & Fils’ vineyard holdings in Beaune include numerous Premier Cru parcels, expressing the full diversity and complexity of this emblematic appellation of the Côte de Beaune.

The vintage

The 2019 vintage in Burgundy stands out for its sunny, generous character. After a spring marked by early-April frosts, the growing season resumed favorably from mid-April. The hot, dry summer kept the grapes in excellent health, despite some uneven rainfall in August creating a certain heterogeneity in ripening. Harvesting, which began in late August and continued through mid-October, benefited from favorable weather conditions, allowing for optimal grape selection. This vintage produces wines with remarkable acidity and impressive aromatic concentration.

Vinification and aging

The grapes are harvested by hand in small crates, with meticulous sorting of each bunch. After full or partial destemming depending on the vintage profile, fermentation takes place in small vessels for 12 to 15 days, followed by gentle pressing. This Beaune 2019 is aged for 12 to 14 months in French oak barrels, with 30 to 40% new oak, providing a subtle oak framework without masking the expression of the terroir.
