A structured and elegant Beaune Premier Cru from an exceptional terroir
The estate
Founded in 1731 in Beaune by Michel Bouchard, Bouchard Père & Fils is one of Burgundy’s oldest and most prestigious wine houses. Today, the estate farms 98.7 hectares across 77 climats, two-thirds of which are classified as Premier Cru and Grand Cru, representing the largest privately owned vineyard holding in the Côte d'Or. Acquired in September 2022 by Artémis Domaines, owned by François Pinault, the estate has embarked on a major restructuring under the direction of Frédéric Engerer.
The vineyard
The Marconnets climat enjoys a prime position on the northern slopes overlooking the town of Beaune, just above the famous Clos du Roi. This terroir of more than nine hectares benefits from deep clay-limestone soils in the lower sections, while limestone bedrock outcrops at the top of the plot. This geological diversity gives the wine its impressive structure and distinctive character. The vineyard’s exposure and altitude promote optimal day-to-night temperature variations, allowing Pinot Noir to ripen ideally while preserving the freshness characteristic of Beaune’s great wines.
The vintage
The 2019 vintage in Burgundy began with a mild winter, followed by an early spring that unfortunately exposed the vines to frosts in early April. Despite these incidents, the growing cycle progressed favorably with a heatwave in May and early June. Flowering was partly disrupted by cold winds, leading to some unevenness in ripening. The summer was marked by intense heat and pronounced drought, with temperatures 2.2°C above seasonal norms. These conditions helped maintain excellent vineyard health. Harvest took place over an exceptionally long period, from early September to mid-October, allowing grapes to be picked at optimal ripeness with fine concentration and preserved acidity.
Vinification and aging
The Beaune 1er cru "Marconnets" Domaine 2019 is vinified using traditional methods in oak barrels. Aging takes place over twelve to fourteen months in French oak barrels, with a moderate proportion of new oak between 20 and 40%. This measured approach preserves the expression of the fruit and terroir while bringing subtle aromatic complexity. Pneumatic pressing ensures gentle extraction of the juices without excessive harshness.
Grape variety
100% Pinot Noir.
