Vinous

Antonio Galloni

The 2022 Barbaresco is fabulous. Aromatic and pliant, with superb depth, the 2022 is total seduction. Raspberry, blood orange, chalk, mint and white pepper are all beautifully lifted. This mid-weight, expressive Barbaresco is flat-out delicious. The straight Barbaresco was made from the less well-exposed parcels, which was definitely a benefit in 2022. This is a terrific success.

Description

Characteristics and tasting notes of Bruno Rocca's Barbaresco 2022

Tasting notes

Colour
Deep garnet red in colour, this wine reveals bright, shimmering ruby highlights.

Nose
The aromatic bouquet opens with notes of black fruits such as blackberry, black cherry and plum, harmoniously interwoven with floral touches of rose and violet. On aeration, more complex nuances of liquorice, dried mint, mushroom and spice emerge, underscored by a subtle minerality.

Palate
Full-bodied and velvety, the palate offers firm yet perfectly integrated tannins. It unfolds concentrated aromas of black fruits, cocoa and spices, while retaining remarkable freshness. The long, lingering finish stands out with mineral, chalky and dried herb notes typical of its terroir.

Food and wine pairing

This red wine pairs beautifully with long-braised meats such as osso buco, game (rabbit, wild boar) or dishes based on mushrooms and truffles. It will also complement aged hard cheeses such as Parmesan or Pecorino.

Service and storage

Approachable even in its youth, this Barbaresco 2022 will reveal its full complexity after a few years in the cellar and can be enjoyed until at least 2037.

The elegance and freshness of a red wine from Piedmont by Bruno Rocca

The estate

Founded in 1978 by Bruno Rocca, the eponymous family estate is part of a long winemaking history dating back to the 19th century. Located in Piedmont, Italy, this estate of around fifteen hectares is now run by the founder's children, Francesco and Luisa Rocca. Regarded as one of the pioneering figures of its appellation, the family upholds a philosophy deeply rooted in terroir, believing that wine is the mirror of its land. The Bruno Rocca estate stands out for its pioneering commitment to sustainable, environmentally friendly viticulture.

The vineyard

The estate tends a vineyard of 12 to 15 hectares spread across prestigious terroirs of the Barbaresco appellation, including the renowned Rabajà cru. Facing south-west and located at around 310 metres above sea level, the vines, some of which are over fifty years old, thrive on ancient soils dating back to the Cenozoic era. These lands are composed of calcareous clay, marl, sand and limestone. The estate applies organic and sustainable farming methods, promoting biodiversity through natural grass cover, the use of organic compost and the absence of synthetic chemicals.

The vintage

The year was marked by extreme weather conditions, with unprecedented heat and drought. The previous winter brought almost no snow, limiting underground water reserves. To adapt, the vines naturally reduced the size of their bunches. A heatwave in early September accelerated ripening, leading to an early harvest two to three weeks ahead of the historical average.

Winemaking and aging

The grapes for this Barbaresco 2022 are harvested and hand-destemmed. Fermentation takes place with whole berries through the action of indigenous yeasts. To adapt to the conditions of the year, submerged-cap maceration was shortened to around twenty-eight days to avoid excessive extraction. The wine is then aged for sixteen months in French oak barrels.

Grape variety

100% Nebbiolo.
