Description
Characteristics and tasting notes of Bruno Rocca's Barbaresco "Currà" 2023
Tasting notes
Colour
The colour reveals a bright ruby red hue, adorned with subtle garnet reflections.
Nose
Displaying great finesse, the nose exhales aromas of red fruits such as raspberry and redcurrant. It is enriched with delicate floral notes evoking rose and geranium, underscored by subtle spicy touches of white pepper.
Palate
The attack is warm and elegant. The palate reveals silky, finely textured tannins, carried by a lovely mineral tension with hints of chalk and citrus oil. Perfectly balanced, the palate extends into a fresh, lingering finish, unveiling subtle notes of cocoa and leather.
Food and wine pairing
This Italian red wine pairs wonderfully with grilled or roasted red meats, sauced dishes such as braised beef, or game. It will also enhance pasta with ragù, dishes with wild mushrooms, recipes featuring white truffle from Alba, as well as aged cheeses like Parmigiano-Reggiano. It can just as easily be enjoyed on its own, as a meditation wine.
Service and storage
Approachable even in its youth, this Barbaresco "Currà" 2023 will continue to develop its complexity and can be enjoyed until around 2028, or even beyond for lovers of aged vintages.
The elegance and mineral precision of a great wine from Piedmont
The estate
The Rocca family's history in Piedmont dates back to 1834, but it was in 1978 that the Bruno Rocca estate officially came into being with bottling under its own name. Located in the prestigious Barbaresco appellation in Italy, the estate is now run by Francesco and Luisa Rocca, Bruno's children. The estate stands out for its deep commitment to biodiversity and sustainable viticulture, having been certified organic since 2016. The family's philosophy is based on minimal intervention, allowing the authenticity of their terroirs to fully express itself.
The vineyard
Acquired in 2001, the Currà cru is a four-hectare plot located in the commune of Neive, within the Barbaresco appellation. South-west facing, the vines, around thirty years old, thrive at altitudes between 200 and 300 metres. The terroir is composed of calcareous clay and Sant'Agata marl, giving the wine exceptional minerality. The vineyard is cultivated without synthetic chemical products, favouring natural grass cover and biodiversity.
The vintage
2023 was marked by hot, dry conditions. After a mild winter, spring proved unsettled with heavy rainfall in April and May, the latter month being particularly cool. Summer then brought intense heat, regularly exceeding 35°C in July and August, accompanied by high humidity and a hailstorm in early July. Fortunately, early September brought welcome rain and milder temperatures, allowing the growing cycle to be completed under good conditions.
Winemaking and aging
The grapes are harvested entirely by hand, followed by a rigorous double sorting. The berries are hand-destemmed before whole-berry fermentation in stainless steel tanks, using indigenous yeasts, for 20 to 25 days. Malolactic fermentation takes place spontaneously in wooden barrels. The aging of the Barbaresco "Currà" 2023 begins with 12 months in French oak barrels (10% new), followed by a further 12 months in large oak casks. Finally, the wine rests in bottle for 8 to 12 months before release.
