The Authentic Expression of a Burgundy Terroir by the Chandon de Briailles Estate
The Estate
Founded in 1834 in France, in the Burgundy region, the Chandon de Briailles estate spans 14 hectares in the heart of the Côte de Beaune. This historic family estate is now run by brother-and-sister duo Claude and François de Nicolay. A pioneer in environmental practices, the estate stands out for having fully converted to certified biodynamic farming since 2011. Soil work is carried out largely with horses, reflecting a deep commitment to respecting the ecosystem and showcasing prestigious terroirs.
The Vineyard
The Pernand-Vergelesses 1er Cru "Les Vergelesses" comes from plots located at an altitude ranging from 250 to 300 metres, benefiting from a favourable south and southeast exposure. The vines thrive on gentle to moderate slopes, rooted in clay-limestone soils resting on marl and limestone. This geological diversity provides optimal drainage and greatly contributes to the complexity of the grapes.
The Vintage
The year 2023 offered excellent weather conditions, allowing the berries to reach optimal physiological ripeness. Harvesting, which began in the first half of September, benefited from favourable weather, with fruit picked at ideal temperatures, ensuring fine concentration and impeccable health.
Winemaking and Aging
Following hand-harvesting and rigorous sorting, the winemaking of the Pernand-Vergelesses 1er Cru "Les Vergelesses" 2023 includes a significant proportion of whole clusters to encourage gentle extraction. The wine is then aged for 14 to 20 months in historic thirteenth-century cellars. This ageing takes place in oak barrels, with a very limited proportion of new wood, without any mechanical racking.
